True, but if Nashville is truly hurting financially then that seems to be most illogical scenario to me.

its not just financially illogical.. the only reason he's 'available' is because the preds dont have him locked in to a contract.. once he's locked in to a contract they wont want to trade him

then of course the paying 27 mil for 1 year thing.

It's true, if it comes this off-season. If they make it to the next off-season, he'll be the top guy on the market since the $27m has already been paid. Biting the bullet could bring them a lot of talent next year.

but the the potential acquiring team would have years 2(salary) and year 3 and 4 (lsary plus bonus) to pay out = $29 million

/one thing i just noticed and apologies if someone pointed it out but

The first four years of the contract have a base salary of $1 million and $13 million in signing bonuses in each year. The signing bonuses would be protected from a CBA salary rollback

Yup, that's true. Also, the signing bonuses are guaranteed and must be paid even if there is a work stoppage. Gotta think it would be tough for Nashville to pay that especially if they're losing revenue on top of it.

I've got to hand it to the Flyers, they really screwed over Nashville on this contract. This isn't going to be an easy decision for them that's for sure.

ya well they should've figured it out yesterday. the flyers raise my blood pressure enough during the season, i dont need this crap in july!

Meanwhile Chuck has this whole cap thing figured out. Big cap hits with lower salaries is his motto. Sorry I have ZERO sympathy for you.

Meltzer is probably the best blogger on that site (and the Oilers blogger is the worst by far)

Richard Cloutier is his name and he writes troll blogs for Eklund to generate web hits for revenue. He has managed to create quite a following (mainly Oilers lemmings who lap up his drivel), so I guess he does deserve a bit of credit.

Entertaining read here...

It is safe to assume that Snider and fellow NHL boardroom right-wingers – such as Los Angeles Kings owner Phillip Anschutz, who is worth $6 billion and funds organizations battling gay rights and promoting “intelligent design” as an alternative to evolution – are backing the hard line Gary Bettman has adopted in contract negotiations with the players’ association.

But as fears of a lockout spread like an off-season contagion among hockey fans, the Flyers have signed restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14-year, $110-million offer sheet. The Nashville Predators have the right to match the offer, and they must to maintain credibility as a franchise in a non-traditional hockey market. But equalling the upfront payments in the Flyers’ contract will cripple the Predators in terms of the team they might hope to build around Weber.

The offer to Weber comes closely on the heels of the Minnesota Wild throwing 13-year, $98-million contracts at Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. And the four-year, $10-million contract the Canadiens gave Brandon Prust was a 300-per-cent raise for the third- or fourth-line tough guy.

Against the background of this largesse we have the NHL’s initial bargaining position in contract talks with the players’ association. The league wants to redefine hockey-related revenue and reduce the players’ share of the diminished pot. It amounts to a 22-per-cent pay cut for the guys who have to absorb cross-checks and block slapshots while Ed Snider is demystifying Ayn Rand for the enlightenment of Sarah Palin.

Atlas may have shrugged, but no self-respecting professional athlete – indeed, no reasonably sentient working person – is going to ignore the hypocrisy of owners nickel-and-diming at the bargaining table while showering select PA brethren with bushels of cash.

Minnesota owner Craig Leipold is, unsurprisingly, a Republican. Most wealthy Americans, with the exception of Warren Buffett and some Hollywood entertainers, support the political party that is dedicated to reducing taxes, smashing unions, eliminating social programs, trimming government and unleashing the dynamic forces of free enterprise that create jobs in China.

I don’t know what Geoff Molson’s politics are. While he’s probably not as hard-core conservative as Snider or Anschutz – few Canadians east of Alberta are – Molson is not going to be marching through the Plateau banging on a soup pot any time soon.

“Them that’s got shall get,” Billie Holiday sang, “them that’s not shall lose. So the Bible said, and it still is news.”

What’s not news is the plutocracy seeking to enrich themselves further by striking hard bargains with the help. The Flyers’ lucrative offer to Shea Weber, however, is sending mixed messages.

Ed Snider’s message to Nashville is less ambiguous. It rhymes with “duck stew”.

The Predators have the cap space to keep Weber if they choose not too it's their own fault for not signing him to a long term contract earlier. It's not like they didn't have plenty of time to do so.
