Hartnell still can't skate or score on his own or stop on the rush without the help of the opposing goaltender.

But damned if he can't stand in front of the goalie and get passes from Giroux to put in the net.

A tweet from Dreger:

Philadelphia is willing to talk trade for the 1st round picks if Preds don't match. Nashville will need players. Could shop the 4 firsts.

Down Goes Brown: The pros and cons of matching the Shea Weber offer sheet

PRO: Weber is so well-respected among his Predator teammates that they're even willing to help him relocate, or at least we assume that's why Pekka Rinne has spent the last week hoarding moving supplies and googling "fastest route out of Nashville".

PRO: Matching the offer would lock Weber under a lengthy contract, and having an unhappy superstar on a long-term deal is a great idea that always ends up working out just super-awesome according to Scott Howson, although come to think of it he did sound kind of sarcastic.

CON: It's only natural for the Predators front office and ownership to feel betrayed and even angry at Weber for signing an offer sheet, and there's really no better revenge against someone you're angry at than forcing them to spend the next 14 years living in Philadelphia.

Sure Poile builds tough teams but he also lets all of his talent walk. I know the owners are different and Nashville has more of a budget but declining Weber's reasonable (imo) contract demands and instead taking him to arbitration was just plain dumb. Can you imagine the reaction if Doug Wilson takes Couture to arbitration, pisses him off, and possibly loses him instead of just signing him to an extension?

Plus picking 20th or later every year makes it a little tougher to draft the same quality of players that Nashville has been able to accumulate.

You wouldn't have to worry about the first paragraph. The Predators operate on an internal budget and the Sharks spend to the cap. Not a fair apples to apples comparison in my humble opinion. Poile has to do some things out of necessity. He did get both Suter and Weber signed to pretty team friendly/player friendly deals prior to their exodus/prior to Weber going to arbitration. To be fair to Poile, Weber was awarded the highest arbitration number ever. When you're under team control, $7.5M is a pretty high number. However, I will say this (and said it on the old ESPN Sharks MB), I did think DWil was a much better GM when he was operating on a (perceived) budget. Who knows if Poile would be as good when he knows he can try and "fix" mistakes with budget.

Don't get me wrong Slim, picking later in the round is going to hurt the Sharks, but Nashville has still been drafting well even in the 13 - 19 (estimated average) slot whereas the Sharks have not drafted as well in the 18-25 (estimated average) slot as well. It's not like the Predators were/are picking in the lottery year after year like the Penguins, Blackhawks and Oilers. So to an extent I agree, I'd rather have Nashville's draft order numbers over the past years rather than the Sharks, but it's not a huge difference.

The budgets do make a difference but I think they needed to keep Weber at the cost of some of their depth. And I had a feeling they might have been closer in drafting position than I was making it out but I am too lazy to look up real stats.

I think that Trotz should get a fair deal of credit for how good of a team Poile can build. He does a hell of a job every year with less talent. If you put Ron Wilson behind the Preds bench I think the conversation is much different.

I agree, but then again, I have a man-crush on Weber, lol. I'd keep Weber unless the return was just way too good. Think Couturier, B. Schenn, Gustafsson and a 2013 1st Rounder. I'm not even sure if I have the average draft picks right (estimated). All I was trying to illustrate though is that the Preds haven't been a lottery built team ala Pitt, Chi and Edm.

Absolutely, Barry Trotz is a tremendous coach and deserves a ton of credit for how well the Predators play. I think him and Dave Tippett are the two best coaches in the NHL. If it makes you feel better, I'd trade McLellan and staff for Trotz and staff too. :heh:

P.S. - please don't mention Grandpa Ron anymore.....I just got through repressing that memory.

Not sure who that guy is. Is he reputable?

Others, such as Dreger, seem to be saying differently.
