We pay more in the first few years, maybe. But by the end of his long term contract, his salary will look like a great deal. I just don't get the major sweat everyone is having about paying KC so much if he does well. Isn't that a good problem to have? It sure beats paying him too much if we would have locked him up and he reverts back to old KC and turns out not to be a franchise QB. I don't believe that is going to happen, but no sensible person could completely rule it out.
i agree

Here is the problem. Had we locked him up now, we were likely looking at $45-50 million guaranteed over five years. It also meant we could realistically take the QB hunt off the table for a minimum of this year and next year. His cap number for this year would have likely been $4-6 million less than the $20 we are paying him.

If he performs to the level most of us hope ( still think some people dont want to see this) then his gauranteed money likely goes from that $50 million tops to around $75 to 80. Making next years hit closer to $20 million again. Signing him now, even if it meant a possible over pay might have actually been better for the team considering we also will need to sign Baker, maybe Gallette and Im sure there will be other expenses. IF he gets tagged or a long term deal next year, it will eat half our cap space.

But whats done is done. For all the good words we hear coming from both sides, as i have stated before 80% of the players who play on the tag, end up else where the following season. I dont expect Kirk to be in the 20% who get a long term deal with the team after playing under the tag.

I completely get this (and mostly agree). But look at the flip side. If we had locked him up and guaranteed the 45-50M and he didn't pan out, we would be in way worst shape with the cap. So SM knows that if KC continues to perform, he is going to have to pay more. But he made a business decision that he is willing to pay more for the option of knowing he has a franchise QB with no doubt. As I said earlier, I may not agree with his decision, but I can completely understand the rationale.

As to are there "fans" that want to see him fail for various reasons (mostly related to The Chosen One and how he was "handled"), of course there are. A couple post here. Its too bad, as a fan of the Redskins, I hope they all do well, just like I hoped for RG3 when he was here.

We are talking about the same organization that has historically lowballed guys who have gone on to start for and win Lombardi's with other teams. Sure we have a new GM who has a clue about the draft... but He was also the guy who brought in Matt Flynn to Seattle on $10 million guaranteed to never play a snap for them. And his biggest FA deals for the Skins have to this point been duds.

True that Shark, but SM had a drinking problem back then. Hell, as Redskins fan I've had a drinking problem the last 25 years.

The possible Salary cap risk should have been mitigated by the fact that we tagged him. IM shocked they didnt make an offer that had the $44 million in his deal, with a year three out much like the Colts did with Luck. If you look at the contract, its two years $47 million at minimum. And if he performs, his cap hit never goes over $25 million for the first 3 years of the deal. Kirk would have likely take less on the roster bonus. But as i have said, water under the bridge. We will either be giving Kirk $50 million in guaranteed next year, or looking for another QB.

If you understand the rationale why would you assume fans who also have that rationale are rooting for him to fail?

Hope Kirk kicks ass as well.

Hundley is an interesting thought. Wasn't on my radar at all until Manny mentioned it but I could definitely see that as a possible plan B in Scots mind.

If KC kicks ass this year that will mean the Redskins will at least be in the NFC Championship game. So SM is going to just let him go? NO way. He would be hung by the balls if he did that. We will pay him.

Bullshit. The whole reason why we were in the playoffs was b/c of KC. He had no running game at all. What a crap article. Another negative article about KC.

See what? This guy Williamson just blasted KC. He actually thinks the only reason why we drafted Docston is b/c KC needs stud WR's to win. Not b/c Garcon and Jackson are FA's next year. This guy is a clown. Any QB is going to shine with good WR's and TE's.

I like to see multiple view points - positive and negative.

Williamson actually has a pretty good rep as a former scout and analyst. That said, you certainly don't have to agree with his opinion.
