NEW YORK -- The New York Mets could occupy first place by the end of the day.

With the Mets idle Thursday, the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals in D.C. That leaves the Nats (14-7) clinging to a half-game lead over the Mets (13-7) for the top spot in the National League East.

Washington now heads to St. Louis, while the Mets take a six-game winning streak into a weekend series against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field.

Yoenis Cespedes (bruised right leg) returns to the starting lineup for the first time since last Friday in Atlanta.

Morning Briefing: Mets look to extend winning streak to eight

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets continue to roll.

Jacob deGrom takes the mound at 4:05 p.m. ET Saturday at Citi Field with the Mets on a seven-game winning streak. He opposes San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain. DeGrom allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in Atlanta last weekend in his return after a lengthy absence.

David Wright is due to have the day off so that he can play Sunday against left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

SATURDAY'S NEWS REPORTS:

• The Mets set a franchise record for scoring in an inning with a dozen runs in the third en route to a 13-1 win Friday against the Giants. Yoenis Cespedeshad a grand slam and six RBIs in the frame -- a franchise record for RBIs in an inning. Cespedes also set a franchise record with an extra-base hit in a ninth straight game. Michael Conforto had two run-scoring hits in the 12-run frame. Steven Matz earned his third straight win by tossing six scoreless innings. Matz has a 0.93 ERA during that span. They also missed a nice chance in the 7th to put a few more on the board...
Oh well.... them's the breaks sometimes.

Still an awesome series win nonetheless...and I'd take that anytime.

Also looks like we're gonna get zero help from the cardinals this weekend....they're 3 outs away from being swept by Wash. at Busch...yikes.
