Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he is "absolutely" considering letting Mariano Rivera in center field this weekend against the Astros.

Girardi isn't going to do it Thursday against the Rays because the game has playoff implications. Ideally, Rivera will play center field in the eighth inning of a game before staying in to get a save chance in the ninth inning, but that's not necessarily how it will go down. Still, it will be fascinating to watch.

Because he always wanted to, just one time. And, there is a precident for this on the Yankees. Many times in the past has a Yankee been pendiled in to play a spot he never has before.

Hell, it was on this date back in 1954 that the Yanks trotted out Mickey Mantle to short, Yogi Berra to 3rd, and big old Moose Skowron played 2nd.

So, it is an odd request. And, it seems like enough tribute has been paid. But,.......?

The Yankees are all about themselves and nobody else.

They'd rather make a mockery of the game than say no to a player

Ron Guidry used to get an inning in CF every year, last inning of the last game of the season.

Not a huge deal. After last night, I think he should just do that though. I like the idea that the last pitch he threw in anger was off the mound in the Bronx.

Or make a mockery of a game that had already been made a mockery.

I mean, who can forget Don Mattingly, left handed Second Baseman?

I dont see a problem with Joe having Rivera play in centerfield. He is one of the best to ever play the game at his position. and his dream was to play in the outfield one day. So if they let him do it i see no problem especially after everything he has given this team

Hey, if the Yanks want to trot Mo out there to play CF in one of the most jacked up CF's in all of baseball, it's his funeral.

Now for my personal hope, I hope the Astros line a few towards CF with one of them over his head and he face plants into the CF hill. That gif will get a sticky thread if I have any say :)

I don't see a problem with it. It's against Houston with no playoff implications. I don't really think it's making a mockery of the game, it's an irrelevant game and Rivera playing CF for one inning is not worse than the Astros making $99 million without even attempting to have a winning season.

I don't think they have a choice. If Mariano wants something, Mariano gets something.

I just want this gloryhound to go away so badly but there will inevitably be Brett Favre and Roger Clemens-type speculation about his return for years to come. And I don't think Mariano can stay away. Before the clock strikes 12 after the last game of the season, Mariano will be doing a massive load of HGH.

That would be funny. But I don't think they're doing anything wrong under the circumstances.

I can actually see God using this as an excuse of why he comes back next year in June.

I don't think it would be a terrible thing and might actually be fun but the real problem here has little to do with Rivera. The biggest problem with all this is the MLB and ESPN hype machine turning it into the usual Yankee circus. If nothing would have been said and they just did it in Houston in a nothing game, would most people even care? Some still would but most probably wouldn't give a damn. Of course, it is the Yankees and most of us do love to hate them. :suds:
