In the real world, it would be terrible politics for him. Except for two things:
1) He doesn't give a shit about governing, and he only wanted to be elected to serve his own interests so he played the playable people. Therefore, "politics" is irrelevant. He couldn't care less.
2) It's a cult of personality. There is some truth to his statement that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose any votes.

I remember the phrase "jammed down our throats" being a constant phrase of some of the members of the Politics forum. That was referring to Obamacare, a bill that spent nearly a year in development and committees before it went to a vote. Now we have a bill that was passed before the CBO office even had a chance to put out an estimate on it. I'm sure the justification over there for this will be hilarious.
