I say $200M is about right. But we all should know by now that bus igning Jrod to a huge deal they have satisfied most the fan base. Thatmove can save them money long run because they can use it to show the unknowledgeable that they are big spenders just like with the Cano deal. Nope.

I just looked it up. $200M would put them 9th in payroll. Currently there are 4 teams that have twice the payroll as the M's. That is unacceptable when you have needs.
100% agree.

Just for the sake of argument I'm trying to think of a way to play Devil's Advocate and I really can't. Not going to at least $180m is a joke. Only argument I can think of is that they want to save room to extend guys like Kirby, Gilbert, etc. but that argument is shit because we won't need to do that for a considerable amount of time.

Your last part is also weird, because Jerry has shown he can get creative with contracts. So why couldn’t he sign a mega contract to some free agent and stagger the years of the big money.

Which leads another question, since Julio’s contract is primarily incentive laden, do the Mariners have to make sure they don’t spend the $10 million a year or whatever it will be for luxury tax purpose.
The pessimist in me just believes ownership doesn't want to spend money because Mariners fans will be happy with a mere wild card appearance in the playoffs, so what's the point spending the extra money to put the team over the top?

I hope I'm proven wrong, but I highly doubt it considering there aren't many writers who project the Mariners will sign one of the four premium middle infielders available. Divish seems to have the best info and he has written it off without explicitly saying as much.

Well ideally a DH would be an aging veteran because he can provide the veteran leadership needed, kind of like evidently Santana did except also produce.

Maybe I am just seeing the lead horse for the league (the Astros) and as @NWinAZ pointed out they got 10+ guys who can start. Right now the Mariners have Hernandez, Julio, Geno, France and Raleigh. A great staff is great and last year the Mariners went toe to toe with the Astros, so there isn’t any logical reason ownership shouldn’t open the checkbook….especially for Turner who IMO is literally perfect for the club with moving JP to 2B where his offensive production is better suited.
Agreed.

I honestly think ownership doesn't want to spend money because they don't see the need to. I think they'd rather be cheap and bet on the roster we currently have than add to it.

I can see your argument which I guess could be true. But I can’t imagine the dudes in charge are really that dumb. Of course they want to spend as little but maximize their profits but it isn’t like the Mariners made the playoff by 15 games. Not necessarily squeaked in but when they have the Astros in the division standing pat is dumb. The late 90’s Mariners as dumb as they were for essentially standing pat, at least they had the best offense in baseball throughout those 4 playoff runs. The Mariners, as it stands, are going to be the worst offensive team out of any “contenders” next year. Pitching wins in the playoffs but offense gets you there. Much like the football saying of rushing and defense wins in the playoff, well you need to either have a historic defense or pitching staff, or a good enough offense to get you home field.

Fansided..makes a good point...for bassit..

And trading with baltimore for minor league..

Guys....2or 3....../ 2 nd or 3rd leavoe guys would
Do..for now....to prop up a 3b..or a 2b/SS they will need for now....

But...that is not a perfect trade..for Seattle..
Where pirates..is not a bad trade..for ji Hwon bea...or a guy like him..a Left handed guy..

And bea
.is suspended..30 games..
No big
.one month...
Pirates Reynolds..is maybe..the best guy..but he is too expensive for trade...a natural Left handed Guy he is a switch hitter...he gets 2 times the hits as a LEFT...100 hits..
40 as right....
But he hits 27 hrs.only a few stolen....but his Ave..
Is a bit anemic.at 267..

So if mariners want him.
They will have to wait..
Tell he is a free agent.
Over priced..may get..

Nada..in the end..as mariners..did with
Haniger...just the way it t goes..sometimes...

You don't always get what you.. want....
But if you get what you need..it's good...

Nimmo...is that .or binantendi...
Or Reynolds...but they don't seem..to want..a couple..Gonzales and flexen....or Hancock..

Well maybe dollard..

Arkansas ..rotation..
Hancock
Dollard....who I think will move up..to AAA at least...maybe even..mlb
Miller...
Byran woo..

Would have been ..macho..but he got traded..

And they put ..
Isaiah thomas..
And..
Prelander..berroa..

On the 40 man.... which may mean...they will get a try out..at.
AAA
Or..MLB...in spring training..

They will probably have all these guys at spring training...I would .

Some things..like a Reynolds trade..sometimes get put together off.till ..trade..deadline.
As the mariners like to eval..guys..then fix .at the he d at the deadline

This should make @ulmax happy.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Mariners are among the teams with interest in Michael Conforto.

Conforto seems to have a pretty expansive market in free agency, having also been connected to the Cubs, Yankees, and Mets. The 29-year-old outfielder is said to be seeking a two-year deal (with an opt-out clause for next winter) after he missed all of the 2022 season due to a shoulder injury. He has almost always been a productive hitter when healthy.
