I guarantee that NFL playoff games will be played this weekend and that teams will win these games...the best I can post about this subject.

SD featured a run heavy attack in both games against Denver this year. 35 runs for 131-yards the first game and 44 runs for 177 yards the second game. Denver, on the other hand, ran only a total of 33 timed for `102 yards in the combined games, including only 11 runs for 18 yards in the loss a few weeks ago. Seems strange in a game featuring PFM as its QB, but I've felt all week than running the ball and stopping the run figure to be keys for Denver.

I think the best way to beat Denver is to encourage them to run. Give them looks. Let them move the ball on the ground. You don't want Peyton in a rhythm and already having broken your D down the stretch. It's too easy. If he has to establish that late you're in much better position IMO.

I think there is some merit to that. There is also merit to the game plan that SD has used this year, since they have held Denver to two of its three lowest point totals and possessed the ball for at least 37 minutes in both games.

Running the ball yourself is a part of that as well. Shortening the game means less opportunity to get into a rhythm through the air as well.

Now, the play action does of course become more effective as well, but a lot of the time once you know they'll have to pass it becomes a little easier to lock down if they haven't established as much of a rhythm. A great QB is obviously still a threat no matter what, but I'd rather a close game where they've been running the ball and now need to establish the passing game to one where they have it established and can now pound the ball on a tired defense to lock it up.

After all the analysis and looking at stats of Denver's games all year, the only real option for SD to win the game is to do exactly what they've done in the past two games. Rivers is damn good, but doesn't have near the firepower than Manning has, and is on the road. The Chargers defense needs to pressure Manning, and the Chargers offense needs to run the ball.

If those two things don't happen I don't see any way the Chargers win, aside from some luck in the kicking game or a bunch of turnovers that bounce their way.

Totally agree with that. That's a big part of why I think that Denver will commit to its run game. Running effectively can go a long way toward turning the SD pass rush down a notch. Running the ball only 11 times in the Thursday night game was a mistake that I don't see Denver making again.

The difference between the 1st game where the Broncos were up 28-6 at one point and the 2nd game losing 27-20 boils down to 2 things in my opinion. The first of those being the success of the run game on 1st down for the Chargers. In the 1st game if you take out the 35 yard run by Matthews on the other 1st down runs the Broncos held the Chargers to 2.6 yards per carry meaning more long 3rd downs. In the 2nd meeting the Broncos other than a handful of good stops gave up an average of 6.7 yards per carry on 1st down. This then lead to those nice extended drives because of short 2nd and 3rd down opportunities. So if the Broncos can stop the Chargers on 1st down in the run game then they should be golden.

Then 2nd which ties in with the 1st is that of the Broncos on 3rd down. Because of the long drives by the Chargers it took Peyton and the offense out of rhythm and without Wes Welker the main target on 3rd down for Peyton the Broncos had their worst game on 3rd down all season. The Broncos have to be better on 1st down (running on a more consistent basis to get shorter 3rd downs) and receivers doing a better job on 3rd down to get open quicker.

Eh, it's not like we had much of a pass rush this year with them anyway.
Our secondary should be much improved this time around with the addition of DRC+Champ who were both out last game

Miller & Wolfe are going to miss Sunday's game. The Broncos pass rush isn't going to be the same without them.

That's true, but don't be surprised to see rookie DT Sylvester Williams have a big game. He has really come on the past month or so, ever since Vickerson went down. Malik Jackson is another guy who can provide some pass rush from inside and I won't be at all surprised if Shaun Phillips greets his old teammate Rivers in the backfield. Key, though, I think, is that Denver effectively defends the SD run game.

I'm not sure how much Mathews is going to play which could help Denver. The Chargers have 3 backs, but he's really played well the last half of the season. The key to this game is the Chargers pass rush. If they allow Peyton to stand in the pocket they're in trouble. If they hit him & force him to move around good things will happen for San Diego. Melvin Ingram has played very well of late. Hopefully he has a big game. I'm not naive about this game. Denver has a lot more talent. They should win the game. I expect the Chargers to keep it close though. We shall see.

Definitely agree with that. Pressuring Manning in the Thursday night game was a big reason that SD won. I still don't understand why Denver attempted only eleven rushes in that game. Seems to me that effectively running the ball is key to slowing the SD pass rush and bringing the SD safeties closer to the line.

The one thing I noticed in the game against Cincy was the improvement in the Chargers LB's. They played very well against a good running team. I honestly didn't know what to expect after the K.C game. It helps that they're finally healthy as well. Denver has so many weapons at WR & TE, somebody is bound to be open on almost every play. The pass rush has to come up big. They don't have to hit Manning every play. They just have to force him to move around, to back peddle, to run some. The best defense is a good running game though. The Chargers know how to beat Denver. The recipe worked perfectly in the last game. I just don't know if they can do it again. I look forward to finding out though.
