Usually when people retort to "We? are you on the team?' they are losing the argument.

I do this all the time. It's MY team. Fans are an important part of any team so to say WE is valid.

I loathe people that get bent out of shape if somebody says we or us. I don't say it but if I did, eff you, I spend money on the sports franchise that's the equivalent of me owning stock, I'm invested in the franchise. Am I out there playing? No, but I am contributing to their salary. Is the owner playing? No, but he can sure as hell use we and us when referring to the team.

this

I do it sometimes. As a fan we are allowed to say that. We watch the games/go to the games and that is what pays the salary of the players. Without fans there are no sports. What about homefield advantage? The home crowd has a direct impact on the game. Fans have as much right if not more, to say "We" because they are the only ones 100% loyal to a team. Players/Coaches move on. Fans are always there.

and this...

I don't do it, but I sure don't care if others do.

When I was a kid, I used to do it for all my favorite teams... Then at some point (probably around college), someone must have said to me, "Are you on the team?". Then, for a while I used to ask people the same... Now, I don't care as much, but in the back of my head, it still seems immature (becasue I did it when I was a kid and 'out-grew' it).... It also seems like the only 'fans' I see doing it now are pink hats or idiots... It seems the same people shout "Yankees Suck!" at every NY/BOS game... which makes me shake my head...

When someone uses "we" I know that they're not referring to themselves as members of the team so why should it annoy me? That makes no sense.

Re grammar, if you regularly misuse their, there, they're, your, you're and so forth, I know minimally, that you didn't pay attention in school. Typos are another matter.

I gave it up once too. But for the wrong reasons. On a message board, much like this one, I read as other fans were being ridiculed for "we" and "us". Put down for aligning themselves with their team. Ripped on before being as passionate about something as they were when they were children. And as a guy who once was a child himself, I thought that was a rather fucking mean thing for someone to do. (Iffy is/was/will always be an absolute prick) I didn't want to get called out for it. So I wasted a decent amount of time and a lot of conscience effort trying to avoid We and Us. And really for no reason. Our sports culture has evolved into what it is in order replace our natural desire for tribalism. It takes the club or the burning torch out of the hands and replaces it with a flag or a sign. (One that might say "Id rather die than be a Buckeye") We and Us alligns people, it brings them together, it fulfills a need we had as children, that were all too often leary of expressing as adults. For instance, "We" here in Michigan know there are two truths more important than all others. The Great Lakes are a treasure which should be protected and enjoyed. And... Shit runs downhill, right onto the heads of the poor residents of Ohio. Dont be afraid someone thinking you're an idiot. With a solid job of face painting nobody will know its you the next day anyway.

And, sorry, but this bugs me. And, to me, it greatly reduces the credibility of the poster.

Typos are another matter

Of course, and most people are smart enough to notice the difference, and, react accordingly.

I hate the grammar police... I try to write correctly and speak correctly, but i dont want to proofread everything i write before sending it. I want to claim i am to busy for that... often by doing that i will miss out on the debate as it is being done... especially with the longer messages...

That is the thing with me Milk. I am not the grammer police. I just use grammer as a way to judge credibility. However, this too shall pass. I have only been here 6 months, and, have not posted with some folks for very long. However, I did have a 10 year run on CBS, so, over time, I was able to gleen from tons of posts which posters really knew their baseball. And, at the same time, I was able to weed out the smack-talking, blowhard, trouble makers.

So, it does serve a purpose to me. Big surprise that it is different than most....

I have not recruited a single player to Ohio State
I have not coached a single player at Ohio State
I did not design the offense or call the plays for Ohio State

I watch them play and watch them win, they deserve all the credit, I contributed nothing to their success.

We however do lose together cause that hurts and I should have done something different to prevent any loss.

and also you did get a lot of free press at your tatoo parlor..

getting upset about we and us is right up there with correcting grammar/spelling on an internet message board

The "G" in the word "getting" should be capitalized since it is the beginning of the sentence, and, you left out the period at the end of your sentence.

I'm pretty sure I only do it online, or around friends who I know root for the same teams I do.

It never did other me as much as do people who think vulgarity is funny. Or imaginative, for that matter.
Vulgarity is more a sign of LACK of imagination than anything else, IMO.
