Its official Sam Darnold is a Seahawk apparently it was the same deal that was offered to Geno Smith and he didn't want to take it. If he can perform at all like he did last season then this is an awesome move. I didn't realize that Sam is only 27 so this gives us a good amount of stop gap time while we eventually look to acquire a rookie QB long term for the franchise.

Geno and Sam are pretty similar stats-wise from last season. Sam threw a lot more TD's though. And Darnold should come in quite a bit cheaper than Smith was going to be. This isn't a "Holy shit!" kind of signing, but I'm not mad at it. Go Sam, Go!

Yeah Darnold doesnt click into " Its all about my stats" Like Geno did in the redzone. Geno REFUSED to throw the ball away, Refused to run for first downs when he had miles of green infront of him and always wanted to "Force" the throw into the endzone no matter if the guy was covered by 3 players. Geno's redzone play was some of the WORST QB play we have ever seen on the Seahawks. I have never seen a QB SO BAD in the redzone.

Cheaper = better

He is a bridge QB and he knows it. Geno didn't want to be looked at as a bridge he wanted to be looked at as a franchise QB which he is not.

Pitt is stumbling, they get Dk but dont have a QB. Looks like they have to run with either Rodgers or Wilson. Then there is the Daniel Jones option.

Sams contract is 3 years 110.5 million with 50m GTD. So if he is paid 36.7m this season and then is released they eat a little more than 13 million in dead cap space. Thats not to bad.

$100.5M / 33M per year

Yes thats the numbers that came out 3 hours ago, less than 50 minutes ago they changed it to 110.5 million. I dont know which is the correct one and i am sure we wont 100% know till Wednesday but its also 55million GTD.

I myself would of rather had Fields for 2 years at 40 million but it's not that big a deal as both these guys are just bridges. I think Fields could have a higher ceiling though.

Without basically a whole lot of luck rebuilding the line, we've seen what Sam does with lines similar to what we have and it ain't pretty.

Not surprised, and not excited.

Darnold isn't a world beater, but this is a quality signing. He's 27, cap hit is probably at least $10M less than whatever it would have been with Geno had he been retained, and get an extra 3rd round pick. We also now have a guy here who potentially could hold down the position for 7+ years. I am a bit nervous about how Darnold might fare w/o as much WR talent (picture not yet complete though) and a troublesome OL (barring a big turnaround).

But there isn't really much to dislike about the move itself. Well done, JS.

Yeah, for what we had to work with the past week or so, I'm very happy to have gotten a 3rd for Geno and a 2nd for DK... Props to JS on that...

I think Darnold is the best of available options. We could still go nuts on a deal for Cam Ward in the draft if we wanted to. Nothing about signing Darnold prevents that. It's probably very unlikely to happen, but then that's just more reason why it's good to get what you can now and not just hope for the best in a draft process that you have nearly zero control over.

Gotta go gangbusters on fixing this line now.

I think they take a QB in a later round, maybe even with the pick we traded geno for.
Word is that like ewers and think he might be there

Ewers will have a higher floor than a lot of QB's drafted before him. Thats not saying much though.

I’d take him over Geno, so it’s a small step forward I think, BUT if their is a QB you like in this draft, don’t hesitate, just go for it… IF it’s someone you like of course …

100% fine with this.

If it's a 3 year $100M contract with only $50M guaranteed or so, then you just can move on after this season.

I don't think this changes the narrative at all... you still draft a QB if you like one, and sit him a year. ALL the QBs in this class (maybe exception Sanders) are sit worthy. There's some very raw prospects there with great attributes, but they aren't NFL ready. This gives flexibility.

Minnesota was a FAR better offense than Seattle last year (supporting cast I mean, namely OL - and they didn't have a dork like Grubb running the OC) so I'd rather have Geno for 3 years $100M or whatever it is, but whatever... this is a fine short term plug. Seattle will have to improve their OL though.

That said, Darnold is being brought in to 100% be a game manager. The offense will entirely focus around run/playaction.. and I hope Darnold can manage that. And $35M or so per year for a game manager is what you'd expect. That said, this is 100% another bridge contract for something else, and I get the feeling Geno didn't want to sign that. I'm dying to see what the Raiders give him.
