You still need good young players. It is a lot easier to know a player is good then hope the one you are thinking is actually good.

And, since we're talking about football players, it's another to realize that the good young player you thought so highly of, pales in comparison to his replacement. That is, after all why they continue to infuse rosters with, good young football players!

I will tell you what...if Fuller’s replacement is better than the sixth ranked corner in football, I will say Dean is the smartest person ever.

I am not disputing that. I just find the pass rusher statement funny. We had the seventh most sacks as a team in 2017. Only three guys had more sacks than Kerrigan. Only four teams had their second best pass rusher with more sacks than Preston Smith. We need to get better along the DL...we need to get better over the middle...then we can see if we need to improve elsewhere.
I'm in agreement GK, starting with NT, ILB & S. I get what you are saying and these areas need improvement but the consistent lack of pressure from the edges is hurting us. I'm of the opinion that Smith will never really be that guy and Kerrigan isn't getting any younger. Anderson lacks several intangibles to be that guy and should be moved inside. Just a thought.

IM of the mindset that fixing the D-line IS priority #1. I cant be the only one thinking that we get run over entirely too often.

Edge rusher is the sexy pick, I will give you that. But an edge rusher only does us any good if we can at least slow down the run and make teams try to pass on us. If I know I can hand the ball off and get 5 yards a clip... why even risk a turn over or a sack by putting it in the air??

Now that's an intriguing idea. I wonder if he would transition well to playing inside? Now I'm going to keep an even more probing eye on what they ultimately do with Anderson.

Like SM said, Anderson is a good football player with a motor. The athletic ability, speed & burst are lacking in his game to man the OLB position but inside just may help Anderson stick around, not sure.

So Payne or Vea for you will work?

Payne if he is there, Vea because I think he is just a smidge less of a player than Payne. But I don't think Payne will be there when we pick.

But in the end I don't think it will matter who we have as edge rushers if we don't shore up the middle first.

I am fine with our edge rushers. Like I said, we are top five OLB combo in the NFL. Fix the middle. DE, NT, ILB.

Alex Smith is a risk adverse QB which only bodes well with a good defense and running game. We have neither.
My bad wrong Smith. I meant Preston

Agreed, as is Murphy... And we just dropped a second on Anderson last draft. Edge Rusher in the first looks more like a sexy over substance pick when you take that into account.

But... we are good at that particular move more often than not.

Sports Center Appearances and High Lights??
Lol, you guys are funny. Read the article today about how Smith is at or near the league in QB pressures so obviously this supports gk's theory however, effectively getting close to the QB is not a result. It is merely a stat as in many stats that don't really matter. The guy is built more like a DE not an OLB, has no quick twitch or burst like a smaller more agile Von Miller. Not saying we need Miller but I wouldn't mind drafting a player who will compliment Kerrigan more and actually get to the QB consistently. Smith seems to show up a few games per season.

And as I have said, we could have the fastest OLB on the planet out there and it wont matter if we dont actually have a solid line. Notice the defense shit the bed after Allen went on IR. Edge Rusher is the sexy pick, the guys we should be targeting are Payne and Vea. If both are gone, then sure take the edge rusher or ILB.

Pressures is pretty much the definition of getting close.

I agree. We have to build a superior DLine. 1st rounder should be NT and hopefully the 2nd rounder is the LG. We need to build the trenches first. We can always sign skill players in FA. We need to built the middle of that defense....NT, ILB and Safety. We have enough cap room to bring in a handful of FAs.
