I disagree with those not liking the movie much. I really enjoyed it. Easily the best SW movie since the originals.

I agree with chf that the beginning was necessary in order to understand and care about Jyn, who she and her family are, what she's doing and why she is doing it.

I do think that the studio went out of its way to check the diversity boxes, but it wasn't as distracting as I feared it would be.

For the same reasons the others stated, knowing how it's going to end is not a valid criticism. Not to mention that

These people need to seriously STFU about the "not enough white guys" shit. Like if that's what's pissing people off about this movie......then they just need to go jump the fuck off a bridge. Donnie Yen was fucking awesome. When I saw the original trailer, I thought he would get like a token appearance, like 5 minutes, if that, like The Raid guys in TFA. To see that he was one of the main characters and got to play a pivotal role was awesome.

I think people are just way too sensitive about the whole diversity angle. I mean it's a galaxy far far away... filled with ALIENS of all colors and shapes and sizes. 'Blade Runner' also had diversity in all the city shots, they went asian for their future feel too.

For all the diversity the Empire is rather bland. I've still never seen a female worker for the empire. A diverse galaxy yet the Empire is entirely made up of 40+ year old white men.

Yeah, God knows the movies would be improved showing the inner workings of insurance offices or health-care facilities.

As far as the diversity thing...eh...at least this movie owns it. The last Star Wars movie almost tried to hide the main characters from the start as far as I could tell. Or it could be something worse like the Overwatch videogame where they are drawing diversity out of a hat to hide that they dont actually have a story. This Star Wars movie boldly says 'No White Guys' and gets away with it. If anything, the white female lead characters probably hurt them internationally so its an investment on Disney's part.

It's not even CLOSE to being as bad as say, Suicide Squad.

I get quibbles. I have quibbles with everything but usually I try to have an overall grade or something to separate quibbles from major, debilitating issues. For example, too many white guys is a quibble with the old ones. Not enough with the new ones. Two quibbles dont make a right but they also arent dealbreakers

Criticizing the movie because you know that they will get the plans for the Death Star is like criticizing The Longest Day because we already know that the Allies successfully invaded Normandy.

yea i'll own up and admit I was totally wrong on the actors nationalities. I have no problem with non-white actors either. Diego Luna (I've never seen him in any film until now) reminded me of a Russian guy I use to drink with, hence why I made the assumption he was a russian rebel haha.

Star Wars is sci-fi and Disney can take the story anywhere, instead they stuck to the original story line. I just wish Disney would move away from the story of the original 3 and take it elsewhere. The Star Wars universe is huge and there is so much potential.

And in having a successful one-off movie, they've shown that they CAN do a good job of expanding the storylines. But this movie was a freaking PREQUEL, so it HAD to follow the canon from the first movies.

Just be patient. There will be plenty of other movies now that Rogue is doing well at the box office.

From the little I've read they wanted to explore the idea of being able to do one-off's and movies completely separate from the characters in the main movies. Solo, Skywalker etc...

However they chose to start that by telling the story of 'hey, how'd they get those battlestar plans anyway?' So while they wanted to go separate, at least for this one, they had to keep it 100% faithful to the canon of the first movies.

Now having said that, I think they're STILL going to exercise iron grip control over the internal logic of the universe, what happened, and when, stuff like that. But in theory, so long as writers/producers/directors stay true to the universe building aspects, they can go a LOT of different ways.

So you can postulate a wookie movie, give details on their struggle with the Empire, but someone coming up with (purposefully ridiculous) magic using magic my little pony creatures on THEIR home planet, that's not going to get the green light.

I really enjoyed the movie. Not going to give it any ratings just yet. Going to give it time to sink in. One thing that I've heard many people say is that to really get the most out of this movie, you need to read the book "Catalyst" which provides a lot of the backstory. I asked my girlfriend for it for Christmas, but if I somehow don't get it as a Christmas gift I'll be buying it for myself. So either way I plan to read the book before seeing it again.

I really liked that it gave us a look at the war and the Universe from a different perspective. I liked that it showed that the rebel alliance isn't entirely made up of good guys. I think for the first spin-off this was a good story to tell. It's something a bit different but at the same time deals with some familiar issues. To just jump right into something like an "Old Republic" movie for the first spin-off would be a mistake in my opinion.

Until I read this thread, it had never occurred to me that the main group did not include one white male. Not really relevant in my opinion. Just like I wouldn't care if they were all white males. But if the Universe is so diverse then why are all the high-ranking officers in the Empire made white males? That's actually pretty easy to answer. They are corrupt politicians. They are an "Old Boys" club. Pretty sure the Empire was at least somewhat inspired by the Nazis too.

Yes they have already cast the young Han Solo and a young Lando. Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones has also been cast but I don't think much is known about her character yet.

As for the story being predictable because we knew the outcome already.....

Yes we all knew they were going to successfully steal the Death Star plans but there was still so much of that story that needed to be told. This movie actually enhances both A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. For 4 decades one of the biggest plot holes of A New Hope was the whole exhaust port weakness, how convenient that was for the rebels, and how stupid that was of the Empire. Well they cleaned that mess up by writing a backstory where we learn that was a sabotage by someone that was reluctantly on the inside. Also it's not as explicit but the lack of cooperation by the brains behind the project and all of the internal squabbling between the likes of Krennic and Tarkin could help explain why the 1st Death Star took nearly 20 years to build, but the 2nd only a few years (assuming construction didn't begin until after the destruction of the first). After seeing what the first could do, Vader and Palpetine took more of an interest in the 2nd and they would have already had all of the knowledge they needed. Galen even mentioned that he was not as necessary to the completion of the 1st as the Empire seemed to think he was.

Speaking of Tarkin, I thought it was cool to see him and young Leia back even if it was CGI. I heard they might be in the movie but thought it might just be from a distance or from behind or something. I really didn't think Tarkin would be in it that much at all. That was very cool.

And Vader was awesome! Loved seeing his castle on Mustafar. I also loved seeing him kick some serious ass at the end. It was like something out of a horror film.

Instead of a space western (originals), or space politics (prequels), we actually got a space war movie.

I'm also curious why he calls the guy who did pretty much nothing the whole movie except shoot his huge ass laser gun, and only spoke when mocking the spirituality of his friend, a "space samurai".
