Sean McVay is an anomaly .. He grew up around his grandfather John McVay ( not to mention Bill Walsh ) who happened to have put together one of the greatest teams ever as GM of the 1980s 49ers ....

You look at the AFC side and we've got 60 Andy Reid who has always been good, but now, with Mahomes, he looks like a genius .. but Andy is 60 and has been around the block

We will see how these young offense minds do, esp in Arizona ( Kingsbury was 3-22 vs ranked competition ) and Green Bay

What they (KC) have is an Offensive system in place, a coach to call plays within that system, and the personnel to run it. For instance Alex Smith did OK for them - and he was an OK QB. But with Mahomes you have a QB who has 1) vision to see where the ball needs to go, 3) accuracy to put the ball where it needs to go, 3) body control to deliver the ball regardless of what's happening on a particular play. So it's a combination of system, coaching, and playmakers. The Denver Broncos aren't going to find the next big thing on O. It has to be built, not found.

I don’t know that they want the next great thing but more creativity in the play calling. There were times the last 2 years I could sit on my couch and based on personnel I could almost call the play. It was better durning the 3 game winning streak but the creativity stopped when Sanders went down. I would argue that when your best players go down on offense that you need to get more creative, not less of the players can handle it.

I'm wondering if everyone just wants some unpredictability rather than creative genius. When opposing D's can look at your OC and know what he's trying to do based on decades of playcalling history you're going to have a problem unless your team's O can execute at a high level. Our team's O can't do that. A lot of teams are in the same boat.

I will add in NE has most retreads number is another reason. Personally, I think they are back to cheating in getting D calls again. Not sure they don't have O Calls as well . The NFL would never know Crystals would be not that hard to find all calls.

“The initial reaction (was) I don’t want to lose good coaches, at all, and you don’t have to. But it’s very tough to keep a coach back when he’s getting a huge promotion. It’s a tough position that we’re in because I want to do right by people, always. But my No. 1 job is to do what’s best for the 49ers. That’s what you got to always think about, and losing good coaches is not what’s best for the 49ers.”

Shanahan said he relented on Scangarello after some hemming and hawing, and a particular promise from Denver general manager John Elway and new head coach Vic Fangio. "If I do this, you have to hire him," he essentially said.

They were men of their word. Scangarello interviewed Monday and was signed Wednesday, becoming an offensive play-caller for the first time in his still-budding coaching career.

I saw this but didn't have time to post it. I thought it was a good article, and give some hope that we have found a gem to lead the Offense.

“With the addition of Rich Scangarello as our offensive coordinator, we’re getting an experienced coach who was a trusted and valued assistant with Kyle Shanahan for three seasons," Fangio said in a statement released upon Scangarello's hiring. "He worked wonders with all the quarterbacks who started for San Francisco during the previous two years as quarterbacks coach.

“With his background and knowledge, it’s the perfect time for Rich to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL. I find this opportunity for Rich very similar to when I first became a defensive coordinator many years ago, and he is ready to take this step in his career.”

Groomed by Shanahan, who once was a candidate for the Broncos' head-coaching position, Scangarello's first NFL gig came in Atlanta, where he served as an offensive quality-control coach alongside Shanahan, then the offensive coordinator. Scangarello spent 2016 as the OC of Wagner College before Shanahan got the 49ers' head job and recruited Scangarello to run the QBs.

He put himself on the NFL map last season for his work with third-string Niners QB Nick Mullens, who replaced the injured Jimmy Garoppolo and C.J. Beathard. Despite a limited supporting cast, Mullens — a 2017 undrafted free agent — exceeded all expectations, completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 2,277 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions across eight starts. For comparison's sake, his 90.8 passer rating was significantly higher than $36 million starting Broncos QB Case Keenum's (81.2).

Kyle is a much worse HC than Joseph is but the 49ers don't have fans screaming for you to be fired if you have a losing season. Lynch being a brand new GM isn't under pressure to win right away so they can afford to let Kyle suck for a few years and be totally fine with it.

Ummm, subjective and WAY too early to make this determination. I'm not a biased fan of VJ or Kyle Shanahan but this is pure speculation.

The point I was making was that a coach does not have to be considered cutting edge or under 35 to have success on offense ..

McVay's success is based on the fact that he's a really smart guy who has been around the game his entire life, being exposed to the architects of some great 49er teams from an early age ..

The notion of the game changing and older coaching as passe is tossed in the garbage by the fact that everywhere Fangio has gone, he's been successful ...

The game has evolved/changed/progressed/regressed a lot since his days in New Orleans with that great defense and four LBers ... but he kept right up and stayed ahead of the game in 2018 ..

Smart guys are not blind to change ... Andy Reid put together a great offense thru 2018 .. Fangio was very successful in 2018

This is true. Kyle's offense is rooted in the wide zone scheme based on his dad's offense. Mike was running RPO back in 2010 with RGIII. I was very much OK with Kubiak running this offense but when he wanted his old flunkies I think Elway made the right decision. McVay was also on that 2010 staff.
