Shorter kickoffs and punts are the main issue I see, if it helps the receiving team gain an extra 10-15 yards that could turn out to be huge.

They use different, specially marked balls for the kicking game (ones that are not used by the offense).

From CBS Sports:

The Colts first noticed something strange about the football in the AFC Championship Game after a second-quarter interception by linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, reports Newsday.
"Jackson gave the ball to a member of the Colts' equipment staff, who noticed the ball seemed underinflated and then notified coach Chuck Pagano," the report said.
When general manager Ryan Grigson was alerted in the press box, he contacted NFL director of football operations Mike Kensil, who told the game officials at halftime, the paper said.

Well there we have it, if Tom Brady wouldn't have thrown that INT this never would have been an issue.

The problem this creates is next season teams will be required to present their balls for inspection by a trained ball checker.

Here's a theory. Defensive back makes an interception, tells Colts equipment manager he suspects the ball is deflated. Equipment manager checks and finds the ball is fine but deflates it to prove their case and to continue their griping, bitching and moaning to the league.

That's a good theory. Those damn Colts are crafty deflating almost every single ball the pats had.

But then who will check the ball checker to make sure he's legit and hasn't been paid off?

Well, I don't care, but I'm sure Indy fans do.

But, your assumption that they used the same balls is false.

Each team has their own set of 12 balls to use during the game. When your team is on offense, you bring one of your 12 balls out and the refs go to your sidelines to get new balls.

They do NOT use the same balls.

Not going to read through every comment but are balls not being constantly changed and checked by refs almost every play?
Why did it take a Colts linebacker who probably doesnt touch a ball very often to notice this?
Im still not sure what to really make of all this, something just seems odd that it wasnt more obvious during the game

That's a good question. People who regularly handle other peoples balls may not be societies best and brightest.

It would benefit a touch passer over a long bomber.*

*I don't know if that's true, but it sounds good.

My point about upside vs downside is why would a team take that chance for a small edge in a single game when getting caught could destroy any credibility the team may have for generations to come.

I just can't imagine anybody could make that decision if they have any sense at all.

they have never had any in the first place tuck rule gave them one super bowl win . that doesn't count them stealing signals and taping other teams practices . so deflating balls is no biggy for the greatest qb ever ! like brady was stopped before the first downs until 2 or 3 push him forward . go seahawks

This is outrageous. At what point is the death penalty on the table? They've demonstrated brazen disregard for fair play.

Yep.

The NFL should hammer them.

- multiple early draft picks in the next two or three drafts.
- Belicheat should serve a suspension (next year....not SB)
- big monetary fine

They have shown a pattern of behavior. It's time to punish this type of behavior out of the NFL once and for all.

Can they please stop putting -gate on the end of every flippin investigation? So annoying. It's from the last syllable in the name of a hotel. Why not come up with something original instead of throwing the "gate" on the end because you think that us idiot sports fans aren't able to recognize it as a potential scandal unless you totally spell it out for us.

Be careful everyone pats fans will be calling all of you trolls any minute as BB is never guilty and the pats are honorable.... I've been telling everyone for years that this is normal for this team BB simply can't help himself no different than a crack addict.
