I can't believe the FO hasn't offered Rak an extension of some sort. I am curious as to what he AND Byrd are demanding. Sounds to me like Byrd just wants out if Buffalo. Maybe the same can be said for. Orakpo???

Chill, guys. This isn't the Danny/Vinny show. No leaks. Skin em all is right. The press hasn't heard anything so they start "speculating" (making shit up) in an attempt to smoke them out. Of course we are going to make an offer to RAK, if we haven't already. It may not be an offer he accepts, but I bet they resign him. Even if we haven't made a firm offer, I guarantee you ideas and concepts have gone back and forth between the 2 camps.

Look at it like this guys. If you are at your job and you know that guys doing the same job are making $100k per year to do what you do. If your contract comes up for renewal and the company you have worked for the past four to five years comes back and says, well we know the industry is paying $100k for this position, but we want you to do it for $50K AND we expect you to perform as well as or better than some one doing it for twice what we pay you.

Would you sign the new contract, or would you offer your services to another company that is actually willing to pay you what the established market value is for the job you have already been doing??

Rak wont get tagged. Some other team will offer him a better deal.

I agree that Rak will get picked up if we let him go in FA. There are too many teams that think they are one or two players away from a Lombardi so they will pay him what he wants. However, we don't know what the FO has done on Rak or what offers have been made. Shark, don't confuse what we say on here as any reflection of what the FO might do. Not sure why you are so down on this FO with respect to contracts.

Also, usually, the Agent leaks some things if things don't appear to be going the way they want. I find it interesting that we aren't hearing from the team or the Agent. That tells me that they are all at work and things are not dead.

Apparently they havent made him an offer. So he'll test the market, and if we lose him so what. We finished better in 2012 without him any way.

I keep forgetting he was gone pretty much the whole 2012 season, when we had our playoff run. The Broncos and Seahawks proved that you can get lower priced pass-rushers and get good results i.e. Cliff Avril and Shaun Phillips. With that being said, Orakpo is a good pass-rusher, but he is not elite. Also, I am a fan, but we have too many holes to overpay for a good pass-rusher, when we can get a cheaper one, who can bring just as good or possibly better results.

Might have something to do with the fact that I have seen this team make alot of stupid mistakes over the past 15 years, to include the last four while Allen was in residence. I think Snyder has a habit of valuing other teams stars more than our own players. And nothing they have done tells me that will change. I think it was rather dumb to give up four high draft picks for an option QB. And I think that the concept of becoming fiscally responsible when it comes to guys we drafted, while we have people clamoring we should go out after Byrd, Talib and fuck all else big named FA is just a fall back to the old ways with a different twist.

I mentioned this several times during the season. The word we were hearing (yes through the grapevine) is inside Redskin Park they like Orakpo and would like to have him back but not at an elite salary. The feeling is he is a very good football player but not a great football player. Meanwhile he sees himself as one of the elite OLBs in the game.

I think the Redskins feel like they made the playoffs without him Allen probably has a number in mind and if he can get Orakpo to sign at that number he'll be back, if someone wants to pay him crazy money then I think they will let him walk. I believe that is the responsible thing to do. Why pay him $12 million when you can sign two or three players for that much or keep a couple of other guys you already have instead of having to let them go because you paid Orakpo so much. Remember this team needs to fill a lot of holes and signing Orakpo to a very large contract does not go hand in hand with doing what is needed.

We are really between a rock and a hard place with Rak. As you point out, he is a very good player. The problem is if we let him go, we can't replace him with like talent. OF course we can shore up other areas with the money we save, but every strong defense starts up front with pressure on the QB and we have just lost a very good one if he leaves. Granted, he will have to be overpaid if we keep him. Its a tough decision, but I lean toward trying everything you can to keep him. Structure a deal that is cap friendly this year and grows on the cap hit as the cap ceiling grows. IF we do this, it means that in the outer years of his contract, we will most likely be renegotiating and extending to the end of his career. This is not a standard practice you want to adopt, but it does make sense for a few key guys and I would put Rak in that group.

While I agree with your premise, why stay where you are when the industry pays more......I have to take issue with the 50% you have here....I can Guarntee the Skins are NOT LOWBALLING that much....If anything they have offered 80-90% of what he believes he is worth.....

My opinion.....We WILL Tag him

Updating a previous item, ESPN's Ed Werder says the Redskins are prepared to use the franchise tag on OLB Brian Orakpo.
CBS' Jason La Canfora is hearing the exact opposite as he reported Monday morning that the Redskins are unlikely to use the tag. It's a game of poker. The two sides are working on a long-term deal and the tag is leverage GM Bruce Allen can hang over Orakpo's head. He wants his top pass rusher back, but only at the right price. The Redskins can't afford to overpay with so many holes on their roster.

No, it was the defense finally not allowing 35+ pts a game over the final 7 games and RG3 carried the offense. Simple as that...

Well it's being reported that if we can't work out a long term deal with Orakpo then we use the tag on him, only problem is no team isn't going to sign him and lose two 1st round draft picks..I hope the Redskins know what they are doing.

I have been wondering the same thing. Unless Rak is asking for like $13.5 a year average, this is crazy. If they offered a deal that averages $10-11 million a year, and he turned it down. I dont blame them. But if they are offering like $9 million a year and willing to franchise him at $11.5 then tagging him is a bad idea. On a deal that averages $11 million a year, his cap hit this year should be no more than $6 million. So in effect we are burning an extra $5.5 million off this years cap to franchise him.
