Nobody could duplicate what Rivera meant to the Yankees. I'm still not sold that Chapman can be as dominant a starter as he is a closer, when he can come in and throw gas.

Starters throw gas all game all the time. He is almost a Randy Johnson type clone. Big fastball, nasty slider. Again we have Broxton who has proven to be a really good closer.

Who is also not signed next year. The Reds would need to extend him.

I see a man who is dominant at his position. Why mess with success.

Because the Reds are not going to pay him what they are paying him to continue to be a closer.

They want him to be a starter, and he wants to be a starter. It was a series of unfortunate events that lead him to being in the 'pen to begin with, starting with not making him a starter last year when they sent him down to AAA....

With Votto and Phillips already out, Dusty decides that the hottest hitter, Ludwig, needs a day of rest, yet they still score nine runs. Amazing. These guys are just picking each other up, daily, making Dusty look like a genius.

And he's not Randy Johnson let's stop that immediately

Not yet. He's a kid with immense talent. Before Randy Johnson put it all together he wasn't Randy Johnson either. The sky is the limit for Chappy, whether he's a starter or closer.

I would think that Ludwick will play all 3 games against the Pirates, unless the Reds win both Friday and Saturday...then Ludwick would probably get a rest.

Big series, and with not Votto, and potentially no BP, guys are really going to have to make sure things get moving on offense, and the pitching HAS to be better from a starters perspective.

Agreed with re:Johnson. Many people tend to forget how wild and uncontrolable he was early on with Montreal. It wasn't until year 3 or 4 that he really started dominating. Chapman is already there with his location and developing slider. He just needs to be stretched out again. Remember, he was already a dominant starter for the Cuban national team. It's not like he hasn't done it before. Now, I realize this is the MLB, and not a bunch of national scrubs, but he'll pitch it from 94-96, mix in more sliders and continue to work on the change-up. When he needs to, he'll fire it in there at 101 and then drop the slider or change in there and really mess guys up. The one thing about him relieving is...he's doing it when hitters KNOW they are going to get about 85%-95% fastballs. As a starter that % will drop and leave hitters guessing more and leaving them more likely to be behind on a 99-101 MPH when he ramps it up, or way, way out in front of the slider/change...even if they are not strikes.

You have to look at the finances of the club as well. The Yankees could afford to have the best closer in the game (best of all time), because they could also afford to pay three or four top quality starters. Rivera isn't effective if he doesn't have the lead and doesn't get to pitch. The current Reds staff has one ace and two guys with the talent to be a first or second starter (Latos and Bailey). Unfortunately, while Latos and Bailey have pitched well this season, there are still some question marks about them going forward. If you are happy with the rotation, I think you can keep Chappy as the closer. But if you need a dominant second starter, you might not be able to afford to keep so much change invested at the position. We don't have the Yankee payroll.

Agreed, and thus my point about the Reds not paying him to close games with the money he's getting. He's going to be a starter because that's where they are going to get the most out of their money.

They can try and re-sign Broxton or Madson or another closer for about 1/4th of what Chapman will be making.

Let the GAMES begin! :)

Must feel weird to have the Bucs in contention at this point in the season. Probably similiar to how Bengals fans felt in 03 after years of being the laughingstock of the NFL

Still waiting for the collapse ala last year. But gotta stay optimistic. 19 years of losing seasons as a fan, there are many tendencies to unlearn. :)

This is where we can point out how much the Pirates used to suck and therefore their fan base must know nothing about baseball and are just riding on a bandwagon..... You know, act like Steeler fans.

Just kidding Dare.

I've got the most respect for loyal fans of the shittiest teams. Those are true fans. It's easy to root for the Yankees, Steelers, Patriots when they win all the time and are constantly in contention. Rooting for a team that is perenially crappy takes the dedication of a true fan.
