I think Arroyo goes after latos, as Dusty likes to keep Arroyo between two hard throwers. Leake is clearly the odd man out, so I'm not sure that it's going to matter much where Arroyo pitches, but with his "experience", I would assume he would be the 3rd guy, unless Bailey is really lightening it up at the end of the year.

So who do you put out as our 3rd starter come playoff time? Arroyo or Bailey?

Bailey. Arroyo is a pro and knows how to pitch but just seems to be so hittable. That being said I think they need to keep an eye on Bailey's innings as they move forward. He doesnt seem like he's hitting a wall but in the past he hasnt had this kind of work load.

Not sure if it's been posted before but has anyone noticed that Frazier is having a better rookie year than the hyped Bryce Harper?

Frazier: .276, 12 HR, 37 RBI, (243 AB; 72 GP)

Harper: .262, 9 HR, 29 RBI (332 AB; 82 GP)

I've certainly noticed, but hype almost always wins out in Roy voting.....Frazier will improve, too, once he learns to lay off the curve in the dirt......

I think, also, it could be determined by where the Reds will play. If the Reds have a potential travel date to a bigger ball-park, it would make a lot of sense to use Arroyo on the matchup day that they are on the road, as opposed to at home. Bailey has more "stuff" to induce ground-balls, where Arroyo is more of a flyball pitcher. I would rather set it up so that Homer would pitch at home, and Arroyo on the road.

Frazier has been doing better than Bryce because Frazier has been more consistent. Since his fast 2+month start, Harper is hitting just .230's/.240's or something like that in his past 2 months, while his HR rate has dipped, and his K rate has increased.

But, if Harper keeps the stats close...he'll win because he's a 19 year old phenom. I would have a hard time arguing with that, though they are both rookies, Harper doing it at 19 and keeping the stats close...I wouldn't argue with it. Now, if he really dips and Frazier keeps it up and improves his stats down the stretch...well, then that could be a different story.

I just think it's interesting how little run Frazier gets for having a statistically better year than Harper. Yes, Harper is young and what he has done is pretty amazing considering his age...but outside of Cinci I dont think Frazier gets any recognition for having a great rookie season. He is quietly outperforming the almost de facto NL ROY.

Agreed. There is no doubt about that.

If I have a chance to have a Mariano Rivera type domination, I'll take it every time.

Agreed. If you have one, great. If you don't, don't feel the need to go out and sign up a top closer for a ridiculous amount of money. Statistics show, that you can get the job done for near the same rate of consistency with just about anyone in that role.

Now, granted, if you have a crappy 'pen, you're going to give up more than the average, but I would have had no problem if AC were in the rotation and this team rotated between closers with Marshall, Ondruske, Arrendondo, Simon, etc...they are all more than capable to come in and get 3 outs in the 9th.

It is nice to have a true closer, though. Imagine if we were still running Coco's fat ass out there in the 9th with all these 1,2 run games. How stressful would that be? With a guy like Chapman you feel pretty damn cocky heading into the 9th with a lead. I mean, it's pretty much over. Outside of a bad stretch he's been dominant.

I disagree. You think just any reliever could have closed all those games Rivera closed for the Yankees. Some people are more equipped than others.

Statistically speaking the last 3 outs are the easiest to get and the 1st 3 are the hardest. I think that while any old reliever might not have gotten quite as many saves as Rivera, the save % would have been very close yes. Though no one is talking about "any" reliever here. Broxton has been a closer. Has over 100 career saves, a 3.11 career ERA and a 2.27 ERA this year. He isn't just "any" reliever.

No, I completely agree with you. There will always be your exceptions to the norm. You will have teams that blow saves at a higher rate, and some teams will close them out at a better rate, because of guys like Rivera, but the overall save % is not unchanged from where it was in the 70's/80's and before when Closers hadn't even really been such a prominant role.

Got that right. He is on a roll right now. And he is going to need to be with Votto and Phillips out.
