If they are going to keep Phillips in the cleanup spot, then they must get a leadoff hitter.....Votto (who is scuffling right now with the knee) comes up way too often with the bases empty....how could a guy lead the league in extra base hits and be batting nearly .400 with RISP and only have 46 RBI at this point in the season?

On the other hand, it sure is fun beating the dirty birds!

Tonight was huge for Homer Bailey. He stepped up in the clutch in the 8th inning and got three big outs in a row vs the middle of the dirty birds order after giving up back to back hits to start the inning. He may finally be emerging as the pitcher he was advertised to be five years ago.

We go into his injury 1 game up in the standings and 11 games over .500. If we can come out of it within 2 or 3 games and 7 or 8 games above .500 it will be a major score.

The way I see it, if they do an el foldo without Votto for a month, then they weren't going anywhere in the first place.....I expect them to remain competitive, and the schedule isn't that tough over the next month....

What sucks is that we'll probably tread water for a month.... If Votto was healthy and the pitching kept at its current pace we could have basically won the division over the next month.

True.....I'm a little worried that tonight's start was the beginning of a bad run for Arroyo.....he had nothing at all tonight.....it will also be interesting to see if Cueto can overcome the blister and pitch well Tues......the pitching really needs to step up now.....this also will hopefully accelerate the search for another bat for the stretch run......badly need another left handed hitter.....

Rumor is that the Reds were looking at trading for Kotsay...I believe he can play first, and would be a great bat off the bench as well as a leader.

Also, Navarro in AAA is tearing it up and has a MLB track record. I don't know if he could sub in at 1B, or if Hanigan could help spell in at 1B, but it would allow the Reds to use Meso or Hanigan in late inning AB's without fear of losing a catcher. Also, Navarro is a switch hitter, so having a decent hitting switch-hitter coming off the bench wouldn't hurt, either.

Agreed about the pitching. Bruce is also going to have to step up his game.

This team is SO weak from the left side that I believe Kotsay could give them a good boost......Meso needs to play more imo.....he's got serious power in that bat, and the more he plays the more that power should blossom......

They really need to figure out that some of the solutions are already here.....Ludwig needs to be the cleanup hitter, and after Votto is back move Phillips back to leadoff....Ludwig has been raking for six weeks now.....

Why did we give up Wood for Marshall? Marshall does nothing but piss me off these days!

They seemed to sour on Wood in a hurry, didn't they? In the long run that trade may prove to benefit the Cubs more than the Reds. Marshall's been ok for the most part, but he never seems to retire the side in order, does he? It was fun to see Chappy come in and blow away the last out though.
