Ravens running back Ray Rice won’t have to stand trial in the alleged assault of his now-wife, reports the Press of Atlantic City.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office approved Rice’s request for pretrial intervention on Monday, and Superior Court Judge Michael Donio signed off on it Tuesday.

Once Rice completes the program, which will be for a minimum of one year, the court would dismiss the third-degree charge of aggravated assault. There would be no conviction.

“This decision was arrived at after careful consideration of the information contained in Mr. Rice’s application in light of all of the facts gathered during the investigation," acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain told the Press of Atlantic City.

“After considering all relevant information in light of applicable law, it was determined that this was the appropriate disposition.”

Rice and his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, were both originally charged with simple assault after the incident inside an Atlantic City casino elevator early on Feb. 15. The charges against Palmer (now Janay Rice) were later dropped.

Palmer reportedly wrote a letter to the court supporting Rice’s pretrial intervention application.

Now Rice and the Ravens will await a decision on a possible suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. In March, Goodell said he would “let the facts dictate” his decision.

So he knocks out his fiance and video shows him dragging her body out of the elevator. He will not go to trial. He will enter a program. Upon the program’s completion, charges will be dropped.

He will pay no price for it. Oh, Rice might get slapped on the wrist by the NFL. But probably not.

Women’s groups won’t picket. The media won’t protest. The citizens of Baltimore will not be outraged. If anything, Ravens fans will be happy that Rice won’t miss any action. Black eyes heal. But you can’t spoil a football Sunday.

The same thing happened in Pittsburgh with James Harrison. Harrison hit his girlfriend. Nobody cared. Steelers owner Dan Rooney said it was OK, because Harrison wanted to get his child baptized.

Don’t blame NFL players for thinking they’re above the law. Mostly, they are.

Aaron Hernandez hasn’t been convicted yet. If the body count isn’t too high, perhaps Hernandez can just enter a program??

1) His wife cannot be compelled to testify against him. She is obviously non-cooperative. Without her testimony it causes problems in the case.

2) A year's worth of treatment is something at least. They have these programs for a reason. If not to put domestic abuse offenders in them, then what are they for?

Now, if he re-offends during or after the treatment - I am completely with you. But the programs are designed specifically for first time offenders or for cases with difficulty.

Since they weren't married at the time, couldn't she be compelled?

As for this BS, I hope womens groups do go after him. A guy gets kicked out of the NBA over hateful comments in private, this guy knocks his woman out and nothing? Give me a break. I realize the NFL won't do anything, but would love for an athlete to be held to the same standards any one of us on the Hoop would.

I knock out my wife and I'm not only divorced, but I'm in jail by the end of the month. :bullshit:

Is this because you have priors? Everyone gets a mulligan. I got a mulligan with a DUI 10 years ago. It was my first offense of any kind. I had to go through a program and happily did so. I certainly learned from my mistake. This was Rice's first offense of any kind. He will have to go through a program. Hopefully he learns from his mistake.

Agree prison wont help his problem. He needs to go to anger management counseling and domestic abuse counseling. Some serious issues when you strike a women, nevermind so hard you knock her out. Prob a circle that needs to be broken. He problem witnessed his dad ,stepfather or mom's bf smack her around

I agree he certainly needs treatment but if any one of us on this site did the same thing he did we would have been locked up on the spot!

Hell no I don't have priors.

But domestic abuse of that magnitude (knocking a woman out, in public) would land most in jail. The fact it was listed as "simple assualt" is a joke by iteself.

especially with the video evidence... I don't care that both parties were drunk either.

To add to that though, it will be interesting to see how the NFL handles this. We have seen what a DUI gets a player, wonder if this will draw more punishment.

10 years from now after he goes on a bigger attitude rager and murders his wife, we'll all look back on this and say "Remember when..."

I think his suspension should be significant. I predict 6 games which gets knocked down to 4 (like Ben).

Locked up on the spot yes. If a domestic call comes in, then arrest has to be made. If you have no priors, prob counseling and a 3-5 yr probation. Happens again , then automatic prison time

Big difference between Ben's and Ray's situation.

Ben was never charged or arrested. Ray was and there was video evidence plus numerous eye witness accounts.

When you have video proof of Rice punching her, video of him dragging her out of the elevator unconscious and you only get intervention???

Look at these stupid qoutes by Ray that the Ravens posted today after his questionless press conference

What role did she play that deserved her to get knocked the fuck out by Ray???

DUMB!!!

This is why when me and my gf go out and she starts acting up, I just give her a stern stare and say "Wait till we get home." Avoiding all that Ray Rice drama. That either quickly shuts her up or puts her back into her southern girl hospitality behavior, lol.

Use to be an elevator was a verticals transport between floors of a building, now it's a place to handle disagreement. Ray Lewis taught him well. :laugh3:
