we had the best defense in the salary cap era

Really? We did that despite being 4th in yards and second in points allowed THIS YEAR. It wouldn't be hard to make a case that Pittsburgh had a better defense than us this year since they led the league in yards allowed and points allowed.

what chances? the giants wr's got open ours didn't. once the giants covered vernon it was over with our passing game because nobody else can get the job done.

with the poor field conditions we should have been riding gore, that could have opened up things in the passing game. not to mention we wouldn't get stuck with so many 3rd and longs.

brees forcing the ball to a covered crabtree would be asking for trouble. at least guys like graham and colston can use their body to shield a defender. crabtree doesn't have the size, speed or route running ability.

I dont like crabtree either but he has 215 lbs on a 6 ft frame... why wouldnt he be able to shield off a db ?

Looks like keeping Brees might blow up some of the Saints roster.

Drew Brees - QB - Saints

According to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, the Saints and free agent Drew Brees remain "roughly $5 million a year apart" on a new contract.
That's a lot of ground to make up by Monday's franchise tag deadline. The Saints could free up $5 million by restructuring Will Smith's contract, and another $11 million by cutting MLB Jonathan Vilma and DT Sedrick Ellis. If the Saints are forced to use the exclusive franchise tag on Brees, they run the risk of losing both Marques Colston and Carl Nicks.

DAMN, cutting Vilma? that's a big name to cut.... Ellis has an ok career thus far.

Drew Brees - QB - Saints

CBSSports.com's Larry Holder reports Drew Brees rejected an offer prior to the 2011 season that would have made him the highest-paid player in the NFL.
This gibes with recent reports that hint Brees has been more demanding than expected, especially after suggestions that he "doesn't want or expect" his contract to prevent the Saints from re-signing other key players. NFL teams can get awfully creative with the cap, but $22-23 million per year for the quarterback would certainly be a hurdle in locking up players such as Carl Nicks and Marques Colston.

how many times did we settle for a 1 yard run in the red zone? we played for the field goal unless we absolutely needed to score a td

It's possible that had something to do with Smith's 40% completion percentage in the red zone (28% inside 10 yards), 2.5 YPA, and five sacks in 68-odd dropbacks.

We had 73 run plays (to RBs, anyway; can't recall any and arounds or fly sweeps in the red zone) in the red zone and over 66 pass plays (61 passes, five sacks, in addition to a few of Smith's six red-zone runs being scrambles). It's not as if we went completely one-dimensional when we got in close.

before this year smith had his best numbers in the red zone. the conservative play calling and the run game getting completely stuffed limited what we did.

throwing fade routes to ginn isn't gonna help anyone's red zone numbers.

Because the playcalling was worse this year than in the past? And the run game wasn't stuffed in the red zone in past years? BS. Smith struggled in the red zone this year.

You guys just have to admit that while Smith was bad in the red zone, the running game was even worse. At least the last time I looked....maybe week 12 or 13, they were averaging like 1.0 yards/carry inside the 10. There were just some fundamental failures, beyond the talent level of any particular player, in their short yardage game last year.

the breakdown in the red zone was the entire offense. it was basically designed to set up akers. almost everytime we were in the red zone we did some dumb play or just ran it.

there was never any urgency to put the ball in the end zone unless we actually needed a score.
