From Evan Grant:

The Rangers could add a controllable young player; there should be a solid market of starting pitching available. They could trade off some pieces. They could do both. July 31 is still a relatively long way away.

"Some of the landscape will be dictated by the standings,” Daniels said Monday. “But we’re at a point right now where the philosophy is ‘Let’s make baseball deals.’ We’d like to support the club, help them push for a playoff spot. That’s our short-term mindset, but we’re going to be looking for long-term fits. If we can get better this year and help define our core for the future, that would be ideal."

The Rangers have been sellers at the deadline in each of the last two years, peeling off veterans Mike Minor, Robinson Chirinos, Todd Frazier, Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Joey Gallo. That was all part of the “teardown” stage of their rebuild.

The Rangers feel they are past that stage, but they’ve also got some veterans on this team that could become superfluous, particularly outfielders Kole Calhoun and Brad Miller.
this would make sense if the objective was to compete and reach the playoffs

I think JD mentioning the long-term twice shows that they have at least somewhat of the mindset we hope they do.
I think it means the acquisition would have to be here past this year and maybe through 2024. Maybe.

Wonder what it would take to get a guy like JT Brubaker from the Pirates. Doesn’t seem like a sexy move but if they see something they could tweak and improve him just a bit he would be a good 3.5 year controllable pitcher.
He has decent velocity and good k/9 numbers.

Personally, I don't want anyone else who needs tweaking. That was okay 2 or 3 years ago. Not any longer though.

Probably get some push back and despite avatar., Huff may not be the solution anywhere but I’d be is I hope it is behind the plate. If we can move Lowe that would be great but when a guy comes up they need to definitely show they belong here. I do not mind depth in the minors in case of injury like for Jung.
We have others besides Huff who can potentially take 1B long term if they perform
I will take Huff at C, 1B or DH.

That is what I mentioned earlier with no response. His bat is needed and we do not need Garver who can only DH and offers little in regards to rebuild or future.

I would, just on the line of thinking about the need of a good 28 starts 4.20 ERA type that could potentially be better.
Once it looks like we have an amazing team and need that ACE then make that trade later on.

We seem to have a need of major league ready starting pitching. He or someone like him would be a good pick up IMO

Figured both you guys think this. all for Garver getting surgery but not sold on Huff yet. Hiope he is the one and mainly hope for catcher

Since we have a back up catcher now, I would like to see Garver put on IL and bring Huff up to DH. He could also play 1B and Lowe could DH. This is a rebuild and Garver makes little sense taking up a position that adds nothing to the rebuild.
i don't understand why the FO isn't pushing the issue on Garver's injury and making him get the surgery now. the longer he waits then the 7-8 month recover period carries over into next season and he ends up forcing the option to be picked up for next season

teams can't force players to get surgeries, if I'm not mistaken.

The injury seems to be effecting his batting also. In past seasons with at least 200 at bats, he hit .256 or better. He’s hitting .208 right now. It’s hard to be sold on Huff, when he was playing once or twice a week.

I don’t understand why he’s not opting for surgery right now. If he did now he’d be ready next February or March.

Point well taken. Huff was doing well early on. He will not impress if he isn't playing. Easy to see why Garver needs IL giving Huff time to prove or disprove his value.

my best case scenario for this season is for Garver to IL and bring Huff back up and play him regularly at least 1/3 of the time catching. I don’t care if he is at 1B or DH but if we want to trade Lowe he has to be playing

Maybe Huff gets it done maybe he does not. But he needs regular playing time that is a certainty

2.5 years of control is pretty long-term as far as midseason trades go
Yeah, that is why I would rather not trade for that kind of guy at the deadline.

The team in the past has held on to players too long who hit terribly. I think we did this with Solak. Now we have some options coming up and of course we don’t want to be sentimental with the vets. I get Culbertson has not started in 2 weeks but he is not blowing out abs JOSH Smith has earned the bucks of the ABs for now

Would perfer Semien in 2 hole and Seager hitting 3rd.
Also Lowe is hot and down in the line up seems a bit strange.

flipping Seager and Semien is interesting. if Seager goes off, I'm crediting the avatars with it.
