Was it the 2014 Oakland A's that had a big lead at the AS Break and then shit the bed the entire 2nd half of the season?
Yes and we were the thorn in their side believe it or not. Especially in September with our call ups.

Know the feeling. Hey Perez gave us 6 full innings using 82 pitches. That's what we want from him...minus the runs of course.

Ah baseball that creation of man which makes us all go crazy.

Yep f'd up game, when Leonys Martin hits his 13 HR and its a walk off

May be too many to pull off this year without trading every decent prospect we have
Probably what is on JDs mind. Whatever we do must make us better not only now but 2-3 years out.

Good job Matt, no thanks to Chirinos and Trout's BABIP fortune

That's why I like the idea of trading for Miller and/or Lucroy. I know that upgrading at catcher and closer is not what we need to do most, but they're both extremely talented, still in their prime, under team control for multiple seasons, and on fairly inexpensive deals. They would both be legit star players for this team over the next few seasons.

The frustrating part is we rely on guys that seemingly go down with injuries every season, like Holland, Colby, Darvish, Perez, Griffin, all staying healthy. Half or more than half have missed the better parts of seasons the last few years and it would have been nice to have some seemingly more reliable options, though I know that wasn't in the cards since all were under contract and expected back

I wonder if AJ Preller would take Martin Perez and a really weak prospect for Andrew Cashner and a reliever?

I know that's pretty terrible asset management to suggest such a deal and give up a young and controlled arm for such a middling return. But that's just how much I've really soured on Perez. JD likely has a more level-headed approach regarding Perez.

Sorry I just want no part of Cashner

Padres Reportedly Trying To Trade Cashner Before Tomorrow’s Start

By Steve Adams | July 20, 2016 at 10:27pm CDT

10:27pm: FOX’s Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Padres are still expecting Cashner to make his start for the team tomorrow night. One source tells Rosenthal there’s a 99 percent chance that nothing will be completed prior to tomorrow night’s outing.

7:34pm: The Padres are widely expected to move right-hander Andrew Cashnerbefore the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline, and according to a pair of reports from Jon Morosi of FOX Sports and MLB.com (Twitter link) and Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Cashner may have already made his final start with San Diego. Cashner is slated to pitch for the Friars tomorrow night, but both reporters indicate that there’s a possibility that the righty could be moved before that outing takes place. Morosi cites rival executives that believe San Diego GM A.J. Preller may want to move Cashner before he takes the hill.

Morosi lists the Orioles and Marlins as two teams that have spoken to the Padres about Cashner. The Rangers, too, have been linked to Cashner, and SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets that the talks between the two sides are ongoing but Texas wouldn’t be considered a favorite for him if a deal does indeed come together before tomorrow. The Royals have also been linked to Cashner this summer, though not in the past couple of weeks.

Cashner is coming off his strongest start of the season, which Lin notes may be a factor in the Padres’ urgency to deal him. The 29-year-old Cashner rattled off six innings of one-run ball and held the visiting Giants to four hits and no walks while striking out nine. That strong outing notwithstanding, Cashner is currently toting a disappointing 5.05 ERA. He’s seen his K/9 rate (7.1) and BB/9 rate (3.6) trend in the wrong direction this season and also been significantly more prone to the long ball, as his 1.5 HR/9 rate and 15.7 percent homer-to-flyball ratio are among the worst rates of his career. He’s also been limited to just 67 2/3 innings due to a hamstring strain and a neck strain.

In spite of those red flags, there’s plenty to like about Cashner. He’s a former high draft pick and top prospect that pitched to a combined 3.43 ERA in 483 innings from 2013-15 and is earning a reasonable $7.15MM this year in his final season before free agency. He’s still owed about $2.89MM of that salary through season’s end. Cashner’s velocity is down a bit in 2016, but his average fastball is still sitting at 93.6 mph, and his 47.1 percent ground-ball rate is largely unchanged from the past two seasons.

Don't get desperate JD

The Choo and Prince contracts will haunt us and won't get better anytime soon. Huge dollars down the drain with both of them

Agree. He is just another Perez caliber pitcher. We already have Cashner problems on our team. No thanks. Unless we trade Lohse and some spare hockey pucks to get him.

Dodgers say back surgery is a possibility for Clayton Kershaw
Manager Dave Roberts says team is "hopeful" Clayton Kershaw returns this season

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw has been on the disabled list since July 1 with disc herniation in his back. Recently, Kershaw's back didn't respond well after a simulated game, which was the first sign that this could be something serious. Now, via MLB.com's Alex Putterman, comes this from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts:

"With the way it flared up, it's more of an indication that surgery is more of a possibility," Roberts said.

...

Roberts said the team is "hopeful" Kershaw would be back this season.

Given how hush-hush teams tend to be about such matters, the manager's mentioning the word "surgery" is indeed a troubling development. As is the tacit admission that Kershaw might not pitch again this season.

Suffice it to say, the loss of Kershaw for the remainder of 2016 would be a crippling loss for the Dodgers. For the year, Kershaw has pitched to a major-leading 1.79 ERA (and a major-leading ERA+ of 218) in 121 innings. As well, his K/BB ratio of 16.11 would be an all-time record provided he reaches a qualifying number of innings. Kershaw was, rather easily, the most valuable contributor in all of baseball this season at the time of his injury.

Given the many other rotation health issues the Dodgers are facing right now, this is the last bit of news they needed.

Man if he goes the Fielder route they are on the hook for a ton of $, and most know after a back surgery its downhill, if not career disaster

Which means the top end of the pitching market just got inflated 400%.
