Close to what? You can't dive through a QB that is sliding. Whether they're 3, 5, or 7 yards apart isn't really the issue. By the current rules the defender has to play it a different way for a QB than with any of the other skill players. If the defender dives through and hits the QB's head into the ground it's going to be a 15 yard penalty and an ejection. Again, the YouTube clip I posted shows the relative positions when the slide begins. The defender shouldn't have played it that way and he could have taken avoiding action. The game has changed.
