This looks close even in slow motion.

Close to what? You can't dive through a QB that is sliding. Whether they're 3, 5, or 7 yards apart isn't really the issue. By the current rules the defender has to play it a different way for a QB than with any of the other skill players. If the defender dives through and hits the QB's head into the ground it's going to be a 15 yard penalty and an ejection. Again, the YouTube clip I posted shows the relative positions when the slide begins. The defender shouldn't have played it that way and he could have taken avoiding action. The game has changed.

Every team tries to exploit the rules to their advantage. I don't think anyone likes the sliding rules, (and many of us hate them), but the clarity of them is better than the ambiguity of not having them. I wouldn't be against fake slides being classed as unsportsmanlike behaviour with a 15 yard penalty. I don't like fake spikes either. However, unless or until that happens we either protect QBs or we have more seasons like 2023 where multiple QBs miss multiple games. The bottom line is you can't justify flagrant breaches of the rules just because you don't like the rules.
I think there is a difference in trying to break rules and trying to break rules that are put in place to protect you. QB protection is one of the most important parts of the game. If QBs are going to take advantage of rules to benefit them, I have no problems with defenders breaking those rules to hit them.

well..it's not like feet first slide has the QB exposed are anything like that.

Pretty misleading stat. Purdy is hurt and I tub has only played once since Young was named the starter.

Love and Murray have had great games but the running game scores. And Williams has awful play calling that kills him.

Young has been better than Carr and Geno Smith.

Lawrence definitely slid late, though. He was trying to get the first down. It's not fair that a defender has to slow down because QB's don't always slide or go out of bounds. At this point, we should just blow the play dead when a QB is past the line of scrimmage in order to protect everyone.

He has a history of this crap. The league was already watching him.

Id say Allen is a whole degree better as an athlete than Mahomes so players generally do hit Mahomes but Allen I've seen pass rushers just bounce off of him or he'll hurdle or something.

I do think QB scrambling is currently the best play in the game. There is a little bit of FAFO with it. Lawrence maybe slid a little late. What happened after that is a foul and is bad for the sport but I don't think you'll ever get that completely removed.

The mentality for modern athletes in theory should just be different than it was 20-30 years ago. Its like the two baddies in No Country for Old Men. Modern players are just day traders. They're good at what at they do. The rules work. Most players do things the right way. Mahomes certainly gets banged up. Lamar Jackson certainly gets banged up.

If only other QBs could the kind of ref protection that Mahomes (and in past years Brady) gets. Josh has taken to exaggerating contact lately since he wasn't getting the calls otherwise.

I am sorry protection of STAR QB's has become protection of STAR NBA player like. Least there are less star QB's that stars in hoops.

unfair playing field?
I have to laugh at the ones who play that card.

Could someone get me some data on that? I remember seeing some sort of stat on negative plays negated because of penalties and Josh Allen was the top of the list. Id have to go digging to find that but thats maybe also not the most accurate stat, either, because sometimes QBs take risks when they know a guy jumps off sides.

I think the QB slide is dumb and should be taken out of the game. It exposes you to more danger when you slide that late. The defender started his tackle just about the same time as Lawrence started to slide. It looks close even in slow motion. Yes, he had his forearm out, but I believe he was attempting to knock the ball out because that is where the ball would be if the QB didn't slide.

The pearl clutching by supposed football fans is ridiculous. It's a violent sport and it was a bang bang play.
Qb didnt slide late.
a man in a denim jacket is sitting in a room with the words `` not even close ... bud '' written on it .

& I am one of those that complain all the time about a QB sliding late & drawing penalties.
There was a shit ton of distance between QB & LB when the QB started his slide.
Worse even with the LB diving towards the QB with all that distance. He then threw his forearm into the face of the QB. It wasnt even close to a bang bang play.

Hit him in the shoulder, actually.

LOL
maybe see a couple frames later & you will see it differently
Its the blow to his facemask that whips his head into the ground Brother.

It's the blow to the shoulder that causes him to hit his head on the ground. Why don't you think that was enough? He hit him pretty hard in the shoulder. He does land on his facemask afterwards, though.
