4 year 220million for Love
That would have been my guess number with lesser guarantees than Tagovailoa received. These are extension numbers rather than full contract numbers. Tagovailoa is now under contract for 5 seasons for a total of $235M. Love is now under contract for 5 years for a total of $230M. Both contracts likely have some delayed guarantees. The 2024 salaries and cap numbers will change.

Looks like 75m signing and 155 total guaranteed.

Love is the luckiest man in the world. He turned about 8-9 games into 4 years 220 million.
couldn't you say the same at this point about one seasons for guys like Hurts, and Burrow? Are the Chargers paying their guy on potential?

Dak has said he is not all about the money at this point. LOL..WE'LL SEE.
I think a Hurts like contract should be the benchmark.

Seems Philly has set the market for good players but not nessessarly the best at the skill positions.

Hurts?
Brown?
Smith?
and somewhat Barkley.

No?

Hurts and Burrow have played and started for multiple years though. I don’t think it’s the same.

I agree on the second part. It seems like the Eagles are often out ahead of the market.

The risk in having the guy wait 3 years and then getting a limited amount of games to base your contract decision is the downside of the Packers method. The upside is that you can actually get them as mentally ready as possible to play. I'll say it again, QB is probably the most difficult position to learn in the NFL. Some guys can deal with the growing pains right away and do well, others need some time and some get ruined because they're just not ready and are thrown into the fire. That list is as longer than the guys that are ready right away.

The other thing that I think works in the Packers favor, and no other team, is there is no owner that is worried about "their money and investment" so they really are beholden only to the fans. There is not some unseen voice behind the scenes forcing the coach to play their new toy.

To be totally fair, the Packers are around Love all the time and believe they know what they have. They have the film, how he interacts with the other players, coaches and staff. While I would've liked to see more of a team friendly contract, it was just not going to happen based on how he played and what they know. If they do play hardball and force the issue of a shorter deal with less money or more "prove it" money that is incentive based, all they would be doing is creating animosity from Love. For the Packers that's probably worse than overpaying him. He walks after the prove it deal because they didn't believe in him, or it really costs them. So, this is what they have and now we'll see if it works out for all involved.

Pretty much what Dan Jones did in 2022. He went from being a borderline starter to $80M/2 years fully guaranteed. Tagovailoa's guarantees should be fairly solid because he has 2 years of production. I expect Love's guarantees to be more conditional and his contract to be easier for the team to get away from.

The Chargers have gone full Broncos/Russell Wilson. Herbert will always start a season with 2 seasons fully guaranteed. If the Chargers want to get away from Herbert after 2025 it will cost them a full season's salary.

I think it is safer with Herbert.
He is an actual good passer. He doesnt make his living with his legs. Honestly I think the combo of Herbert & Harbaugh is gonna be an interesting combo. Seems like it will be pretty stout to me. He may not be slinging it like he has been, since he will have actual coaching on his team for once, but I think that team has a good foundation on offense. He will get better but his stats may go down.

I thought the Wilson contract was comparatively safe. I didn't expect Wilson's play to fall off a cliff. I like Herbert. He's worth what they're paying him each year, but if his play falls off a cliff it will become similarly messy.

yeah # wise I get it.
my point is Wilson made his living extending plays so defenses could break down & then make his heroics.
Herbert is more of the pocket QB, who relies on his arm & smarts (not legs) so the likelihood of falling off that cliff is much harder to visualize.
He is simply a higher caliber "passer" than Wilson.

yeah I am too.
We will see the type of person he is. Can he keep his ego in check?
He wont be breaking records as an individual under Harbaugh (I suspect)
but can get better as a player as a whole.
Or does he get upset & feel like he is being held back?
I think it will be a positive, but there is a scenario where it isnt.

Harbaugh’s coaching strategy is more centered around rushing the ball than passing, he wants have a powerful rushing game behind a strong O-Line. His QBs have never put up huge numbers, so it will be interesting to see how Herbert does in his system.
