They say his arm is huge, and hes accurate........yet some scouts i saw broke down game tape and said he threw like 60 percent of his passes under 10 yards and most of those under 5 yards..........and 10-20 yards he was like 50% and a paltry like 17% 20+...............whats the deal here.......from maybe raiders fans who researched him

Most throws are short for every QB. Also, arm strength is more relevant for velocity, whether that be getting a deep ball there fast before the defense can adjust or getting a shorter pass quickly in a tight window. It isn't about distance (though a stronger arm will get it there faster). A good example is - Alex Smith CAN throw it 60-65 (or 70) yards if needed, it would just get there too late. The defender would adjust and defend (INT or deflect). It would also require more time to wind up and step into the throw.

Ok, didn't see all the stats, just two percentages you posted and talk about frequency. That's what prompted my response.

The Raiders should start someone else until the first Kansas City home game and when the Raiders' QB struggles, chant, "We want Carr." I'm sure that would bring fond memories to Alex Smith.

The problem I saw with Carr against USC is that he has no accuracy. He looked like Tyler Bray

I agree Carr doesn't seem very accurate. His arm is more than strong enough, but I don't think he'll succeed in the NFL. He's a Matt Schaub at best IMO.

I heard Joe Montana say once that football was a 40 yard game ...or rather that no play is designed for a 'touchdown' plays at a max are designed to 40 yards and sometimes playmakers get more yards of course. That chart pretty much proves that...cool chart

This is my big issue with Carr. He has a tendency to play poorly in big game situations. I have a feeling he's going to end up just like his brother.

Accuracy can improve

I remember when Vick 1st came into the league...powerful arm, but he couldn't hit 5 passes in row to an open WR from 15 yds...just wasn't accurate. He got a lot better at in PHI with better coaching.

I guess that's why a terribly inaccurate but strong armed QB like Thomas Logan gets drafted before AJ McCarron and Aaron Murray.

Perceived physical tools are what NFL teams look for, first and foremost. Graham Harrell and Chase Daniels put up elite stats in the Big-12, and they didn't get drafted. Why? Because they are short and didn't have the elite physical tools.

Derek Carr looks like a bust to me, because I never really saw him show up in big games.

I watched him quite a bit. Fresno's offense was literally wr screens, shovel passes, and the deep ball. It is literally all they did but it was successful

He rifled too many; he didn't have much touch. Alge Crumpler seemed to be the only guy who could snag those lasers with some sort of consistency. Accuracy was part of it but he wasn't helping his receivers with some of those throws.

Derek Carr will be a top 5 QB in the next few years.

This numbness in his finger could be an issue. It's all being down played right now, but we shall see.

This is a multitude of issues combined into a clusterfuck of perception. I watch a ton of Raider games bc my wife is a Raider fan and its the only way I can continue to get my way of having the NFL package at my house.

First, the Raiders OL was not very good at all. The short passes almost seemed to be a necessity to ensure that Derek doesn't get destroyed like his older brother at HOU.

Second, the Raiders WR corps was pretty terrible with a couple guys that could run fly routes but without the time to allow those routes to complete themselves, you didn't see those too much. The way the Raiders countered that were a ton of short passes in hopes that speed and agility would win out. Most of the time, it didn't.

Lastly, Carr isn't terribly accurate. I DO believe that he can be pretty good but he will need a bit of help. He is not a QB that can carry the load himself. The Raiders did a great job in the draft, picking up Cooper out wide and Walford at TE to give Carr legitimate weapons. They signed that C from KC IIRC to help stop the interior pressure they saw with regularity last season and time will tell in order to see if their OL improves but it seems as if they are building that team with quality pieces.

The leadership skills with Carr are there. The decision making is there. The arm is STRONG. The accuracy needs to improve but until we see him throw from an actual pocket and NOT running for his life, we won't really know how much improvement is necessary.

He's lucky he still has an arm left playing for Oakland.
