My guess is it might have something to do with the fact that these players are paid millions to play hockey and not sit in the pressbox due to preventable injuries. They pay what must be insane premiums to insure the contracts from injury. I'm sure these premiums would eventually drop significantly if players started to protect themselves better.

Edit - I'm also sure the players would start protecting themselves better if they forfeited their salary while sitting out due to injuries that were deemed preventable.

You've got some good points here. I especially like the financial incentives to the the NHL implementing some more equipment rules. While I don't think the NHL will take that step it would be good for business in the long run.

While I also like the idea of players loosing money for preventable injuries, I think that would cause more problems than it is worth. Who would decided what is a preventable injury? It's an interesting idea though.
