They brought up an interesting question on 1620 this morning. Tomorrow marks the ten year anniversary of the hiring of Bill Callahan and the start of possibly the darkest era in husker football. So the question is, where does the program stand today compared to when Callahan was hired? Consider results, the trajectory of the program, talent on the roster and coming into the program, and anything else you think is important.

Poll forthcoming.

Well Callahan hasn't been offered a college/pro HC job since, so we can be pretty confident he isn't championship HC material.

Pelini hasn't gotten a job offer elsewhere and there's been a plethora of opportunities for someone to steal the coach who's won at least 9 games/yr in his first 6 years. Apparently nobody is willing to pay similar money for that accomplishment on the chance that his experience gained will turn their programs around and eventually lead to conference or national titles. Most of the guys getting the job offers are doing more with less.

I went with "We are at the same place but heading backwards" as the closest answer to my personal opinion.
For 2014 and beyond, I could see an 8 or even 7 win season before an 11 or better win season.

I hope I'm wrong about it, but Nebraska doesn't execute like first or second tier programs do now and did prior to 2004. They are deeply rooted in 3rd or even 4th tier level of play. Their peers have changed. They don't beat the teams they're supposed to beat like they should. They've been barely scrapping by.

I said we are worse of now then when Solich was fired. My reasoning is because Solich realized there were problems and was making changes to address them.

Not sure if the changes made would of made a difference but the first step to solving a problem is to admit there is a problem. That alone put us ahead of where we are now.

edit: If the comparison was when Callahan was fired I would say better

HuskerinSECLand brings up the best point - Solich was actually trying to correct his problems. I haven't seen much of a sign that Bo is willing to do that. I honestly would probably just prefer to put "the same" neither upward nor downward at the moment, but without that option, I'll put downward.

The most accurate answer would be "in the same place and heading nowhere" based on the 4-loss thing we got goin on.

But we're better off.

The most accurate answer would be "in the same place and heading nowhere" based on the 4-loss thing we got goin on.

I'd have considered that if it were an option, but probably would still have gone with my original answer.

The close calls with NR Wyoming, Northwestern and Michigan.
The double digit losses to NR Minnesota and Iowa.
The special teams play.
The turnover trend.
The history of Bo's defense not executing until mid-seasons.
The declaration by Bo that he's not making any staff changes.

Too many things tend to point to a peaked process in 2010 and other conference opponents improving or keeping pace.

I put "Other" because it is just about the same as when Solich was fired ~ no better ~ no worse. We had a couple better seasons with Bo (over the past two seasons), but the same could be said about the Solich years --> on the field. Now if you are asking about recruiting, Bo has got Frankie beat and that is a reason for the fall off soon after T.O. retired and his players were through the system. Frank's coaches were better at teaching, not recruiting.

 that's what I said, I didn't even notice "other" as an option.

I did that a lot in high school and my grades reflected it :L I learned how re-read questions and options in college and got better grades.

I really don't think we are heading backwards to be honest....

If we were heading backwards there are a fair amount of games this season that we would have lost.....much like the 2007 season under Callahan when the team gave up.

We are either in neutral or moving forward as far as I see it.....otherwise we would have never won games on the road at Michigan and Penn State, or the bowl game against Georgia. Those were all 3 games where things were looking pretty shaky in previous weeks before those games, and still Bo didn't lose the team and they managed to show up and play well.

Are we inconsistent? Absolutely. But heading backwards? I don't see that. I saw Solich heading backwards to be honest.....recruiting was an issue back then.

I said other. I believe we are moving forward but strongly believe that had we not fired Frank we would have at least one Natty since that time. We really fucked up in firing Solich in my opinion.

At the start of the season I began documenting our Defense's statistical outputs to show how poorly they were performing under Pelini. Almost all of us were fed up with the piss poor tackling, technique, and fundamentals. The stats proved it all.

But let's go back and look at week 3 when everything hit it's peak. We had reached the summit of Mt. Shit, and the sky was certainly falling. Below you can see all of the Defensive stats from week 3, and then behind each you can see how we finished the season.

We improved in every single statistical category, and in some cases by a lot.

Out of 125 teams....

Total Defense - After Week 3: #106.......After Season: #39
Rushing Defense - After Week 3: #72.......After Season: #54
Passing Defense - After Week 3: #116.......After Season: #32
Scoring Defense - After Week 3: #85.......After Season: #49
Sacks - After Week 3: #74.......After Season: #12
Tackles for loss - After Week 3: #34.......After Season: #17
Opponent First Downs - After Week 3: #119.......After Season: #48
Plays of 10+ yards given up - After Week 3: #122.......After Season: #68

I said other- When Solich was fired we had new coaches and we were trending upward...specifically the defense that Craig Bohl couldn't fix.

Not to mention other position coaches on the staff.

So who knows what could have happened if Frank had a chance with his own revamped staff.

good riddance steve p

Here's hoping Bo gets good return on this next hire. He threw way too much, or maybe too soon, on Els I think.
