I watched the ESPN episode of 'Game of the Century.' There's been several of those, but one that sticks out to me is Nebraska-Oklahoma in '71. Nebraska won 35-31 and it lived up to the hype. Had an 8-team playoff been in play back then it would've roughly looked like this...

(1)Nebraska (12-0) v (8)Arizona St (10-1)
(4)Michigan (11-0) v (5)Auburn (9-1)

(2)Alabama (11-0) v (7)Colorado (9-2)
(3)Oklahoma (10-1) v (6)Georgia (10-1)

How kick ass would that have been?
Instead, we got...
Orange--(1)Nebraska 38, (2)Alabama 6.
Sugar--(3)Oklahoma 40, (5)Auburn 22.
Rose--(16)Stanford 13, (4)Michigan 12.
Gator--(6)Georgia 7, (UR) No Carolina 3.
Bluebonnet--(7)Colorado 29, (15)Houston 17.
Fiesta--(8)Arizona St 45, (UR)Florida St 38.

1972...
(1)USC (11-0) v (8)Michigan (10-1)
(4)Alabama (10-1) v (5)Penn St (10-1)

(2)Oklahoma (10-1) v (7)Texas (9-1)
(3)Ohio St (9-1) v (6)Auburn (9-1)
--------
1973...
(1)Alabama (11-0) v (8)Texas (8-2)
(4)Ohio St (9-0-1) v (5)Michigan (10-0-1)

(2)Oklahoma (10-0-1) v (7)USC (9-1-1)
(3)Notre Dame (10-0) v (6)Penn St (11-0)
(six teams with a '0' in the loss column)

This makes me giddy.

I used to be a big proponent of 8 teams, the 5 P5 champs + highest ranked GO5 then 2 at large bids. Over the last year or two I'm kind of leaning towards just taking the top 6 or 8 ranked teams regardless of conference
Top six regardless. Top two seeds get a first round bye.

I like 16

2 OOC games
9 conference games

Conference title games for P5 determine autobids

Top G5 autobid

10 best at large

P5 champs and top G5 get top 6 seeds

First 8 playoff games played at homefield of higher seeded teams

This yesr wouldve been

1. Bama
2. Michigan
3. Cincy
4. Baylor
5. Utah
6. Pitt
7. Georgia
8. ND
9. OSU
10. Ole Miss
11. OK State
12. MSU
13. BYU
14. Oregon
15. Iowa
16. Oklahoma

Personally id adjust at large seedings to avoid same conference matchups so i see this

16 Oklahoma at 1 Bama
15 Oregon at 2 Michigan
14 Iowa at 3 Cincy
13 BYU at 4 Baylor
12 MSU at 5 Utah
11 OK State at 6 Pitt
10 OSU at 7 UGA
9 Ole Miss at 8 ND
