NEW YORK -- A scout assigned to the Mets minor-league system believes Dilson Herrera...

....likely will have a brief adjustment period, but should be more than capable of holding his own at the major league level.

The scout said Herrera's Double-A production (.340, 10 HR, 48 RBIs in 241 at-bats) is not a product of taking advantage of Double-A-caliber pitching. Instead, the scout praised Herrera's use of all fields, his line-drive stroke and a solid two-strike approach.

"He may be a little anxious at the beginning," the scout said, "but I think the kid will do fine."

Meanwhile, one reason why Herrera likely was selected over Matt Reynolds? Herrera, originally signed in 2010 by the Pirates out of Colombia, needed to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason anyway to shield him from the Rule 5 draft, whereas Reynolds -- drafted in 2012 -- does not. Reynolds is headed to the Arizona Fall League.

NEW YORK-- 8/29 -- Triple-A Las Vegas manager Wally Backman has been named Pacific Coast League manager of the year.

Backman, 54, has led the 51s to the PCL's Pacific Southern Division title for a second straight season.

The playoff-bound 51s are a PCL-best 80-61 with three games remaining in the regular season.

Struggling Curtis Granderson gets a day off after starting 23 straight games. He is 1-for-17 on the homestand and hitting .147 (16-for-109) with two extra-base hits in August.
