I'm becoming more optimistic. Phils are 16 games over .500 at 74-58. Can they play .600 ball in the remaining 30 games? Hitters have gone HR happy, team BA is .260, and pitching is much improved: Nola 12-8, Wheeler 10-6, Walker 14-5, and Lorenzen 8-8. Relievers Strahm and Kimbrel are 15-7.
First, last year Phils were 18 over .500 at 80-62 on Sept. 14. But in the final 20 games, they suffered two 5-game losing streaks with a 7-13 record to finish 87-75. They went 2-5 vs Braves, 0-3 vs Cubs, and 0-2 vs Astros.
It's a different story this year. Next month they face the tough Braves 7 times and MIL this weekend. But of the remaining 30 games, 20 are against losers - Mets, STL, PIT, MIA, and SD.
.600 ball at 18-12 is a reasonable goal for the month to finish at 92-70. Let's see how this works out.
