All this tells me is the Lions will be going to a power running game this year behind Bell and Bush.

Not with Lombardi as the offensive coordinator. The Saints were good at running the ball, but it's definitely not what I'd call a power running scheme...

But do we "know" what Lombardi wants to run based off the Saints though? He was in charge of Brees and the QBs, not the offense as a whole. I've read things on what he wants and intends to do here, just not too certain the Lions offense will mirror what NO's was with JL as QB coach.

He has stated that he is going to start with a similar playbook to New Orleans and adapt it to the particular talents that Detroit possesses (or will possess). I think a lot will depend on how Lombardi feels about the talent level of Pettigrew.

The fact he was brought back has to say something about what Lombardi thinks of him.(Unless Mayhew made the call completely on his own.). I've always thought BP was a good option in the short range and pretty high quality for a all around tight end. (There are more and "athletic" TEs that don't really play the position much. BP doesn't split out wide.) If we do end up seeing something more along the lines of New Orleans offense, those deep seem routes will be tough with Fauria and BP compared to Jimmh Graham. But I definitely think the running backs (with or without LeShoure) would be excellent assets. Always seemed like Brees hit his backs quite a bit.

Lombardi will have to adjust his play calling with Detroit. We don't have a TE to run deep seem routes, but we do have two TE's who are good red zone threats. I think we will see the TE position utilized the same as it has been for a while here in Detroit -- basically an extension of the running game. If BP can't hold onto the ball -- he is a quality TE. They reported on the radio today, in 2012, he had 9 drops and 4 fumbles. That is unacceptable, but he gets that under wraps -- he is a valuable piece of the offense.

I don't think Mikel sees the field again for the Lions. Expect Stafford to spread the ball around a lot. With CJ, Tate, Bush, and Bell, the Lions have 4 legitimate options that could score every time they touch the ball. Tate is going to surprise people. The dude is always where he should be and doesn't drop the ball. With the single coverage he is going to draw, watch out. Bush could be the weak link on the offense. He lacks consistency and tends to sulk and "get injured" when things don't go his way.
Pettigrew doesn't need to be Graham, he just needs take advantage of the mismatches he will face.

I think Fauria will be the deep seam option at TE. He doesn't have great speed, but his absurd catch radius and good body control gives him an edge over any DB or LB one-on-one. He's not much of a threat to go the distance after the catch, but if he can haul in 15-20 yard darts down the seam I'll take that every time.

I'd like to add that he won't get separation like a Jimmy Graham type, but he also doesn't need any separation on a well thrown ball.

I feel a lot better about the offense knowing BP is back. Didn't think we'd find an every down TE like him. They were just talking about Caldwell looking for fullbacks on the radio. Im not sure if there are any who have functioned as receiving targets in the past. Like Schlessinger used to be. But I think Collins from NO is still on the market. He's caught a few balls, nothing much, but a few.

Also heard on the radio that in BP's first three seasons as a Lion, nobody other than #81 caught more passes, even with the passes he dropped. (Pretty sure his drop rate was lower than everyone but Fauria last year though.)

Woah, I'm still a Stafford fan and think he will be just fine, don't lump me in that group.

Just feels like it's shaping up that way. Pettigrew signing plus looking at a FB in free agency. Lions never brought in FB's in free agency under Schwartz.

The Saints did utilize a true FB, for what it's worth.

He'd better or all is lost and not just for next year either. Love the Grew signing. I'm not a money/cap aficionado like some of you guys but it sounds like a bargain to me if he can continue to build on what he did last season after the first couple of games. He was one of the few bright spots.
