You make it sound like he had no say in the matter. And it's hardly the Pats' fault the Bills overpaid Taylor.

I see it more as an ackowledgement that the cap and the QB market have outpaced his deal a bit with a lot of guys getting big deals since he signed his last one. This way if he hits all the incentives, he'll take home more cash this year than any QB except the guys that are in the first years of their new deals, and his AAV will move closer to the middle of the Top 10. I get the sense what we're moving toward is him playing out this deal (all his prior extensions were 4 or 5 years, this one was only 2), and then going year-to-year if he wants to keep playing after that.

Well I am sure that's what it is. I am fairly certain it's also a parting gift.
