Well, if you guarantee it once and you miss ok, but twice, well your guarantee is worthless now, and silly

I never understood why some of these athletes have to "guarantee" a win? Most of the time they come out and look like an ass. Ovi of all people should know better. My money was on the Rags. The Caps just can't finish off opponents. The TB vs Rags is going to be a great series IMO.

you can say it in way that does not guarantee.........

just makes you look a fool........and twice........the greats make that comment, and back it up, ovie has done it twice and not backed it up

How bout

"its been a great series, game 7 is gonna be a fight"

"get your popcorn ready"

"game 7 were gonna bring everything we have"

""were gonna take it to them"

just off the top of my head.........

So once is OK but twice is bad? Ok, glad I know the rule. I guarantee I wont forget it this time.

I really hope I never hear a pro athlete say "get your popcorn ready".

I mean, he scored the first goal of the game for the Caps.

Ovi didn't factor in games 4-5-6, but he definitely got the game started the right way for Washington in game 7. I don't care all that much about the "guarantee" in sports because it's a now worn out cliche. I think the overriding factor in all of this is Henrik Lunqvist is likely the best goalie in the sport, today. That claim is supported by the fact that he's now 6-0 in his last six game 7's.

Enough said.

Throw a Cup or two on his resume and he'll start getting mentioned in the GOAT conversation.

Guarantees in hockey are much tougher to fulfill than say in football or basketball when a QB touches the ball on every offensive snap or the offense run through two star players like in the NBA. I haven't looked at the TOI for OV last night, but I bet he likely played just a little over 20 minutes (maybe a little more because the game went to OT). He scored a goal and registered 8 shots on net, it just didn't quite work out for him in the end.

Edit: 21:47 TOI for OV last night.

Yeah, that would cement his legacy, for sure. The clock is definitely ticking on him, though. He'll be 34 by the end of next season.

This thread will just annoy me if I keep up with it but i'll just say that no matter what OV does, people will find a way to criticize him.

He had a great season all the way to the bitter end ... great game by him last night

still think he looks like he needs to drops a few lbs

Ovechkin's a great player but he needs to step it up more if Washington's going to do anything in the playoffs.

7 consecutive 1 goal games in this series...as good as it gets. I don't mind that Ovechkin made his 2 "guarantee" statements, showed confidence and leadership to his team mates. Congrats to the Rangers for finally shutting the BIG "O" down as he was almost unstoppable thruout the playoffs up until Games 5, 6 and 7.

Can't blame Ovechkin for the Caps loss. If anyone, blame Mike Green for taking two straight dumb penalties that kept Ovechkin on the bench for the first quarter of the second period.

The Caps fucking suck when it matters the most, but anyone blaming OV needs to have their brain donated to research

OV scored the first goal of the series for the Caps and their last goal of the series, both on the road - he might not have done much in games 4, 5, and 6 but the only reason a guy like Rick Nash(who was a top three goal scorer in the league this season) doesn't get his feet melted by the fire is because the Rangers found a way to win and he didn't do ANYTHING in this series - he is the absolute worst in the playoffs and I don't think he has the excuse of being injured this time around - OV did everything the coach wanted him to do and he still found a way to be an offensive force

People blaming OV at this point is just getting beyond old and I'm tired of hearing it - I don't know what else you want him to do? The Caps don't have the necessary offensive pieces to surround him in order to win - the two young'ins might be helpful in the future but they need more than that - they need a second line scoring center who will be a force because the options they have right now will never get them over the hump

If the Caps won, everyone who is criticizing OV for this quote would be all over his nutsack talking about how amazing of a player he is and how he is the best player ever - you guys put way too much stock into comments people make - instead, you should take more stock in the actions that a player has and OV did everything he possibly could to win - there are way more players you can look at and say "He didn't do enough" than OV

Its my opinion that Ovechkin said what he did to take the focus off the team having blown 3-1 leads in the past. His comments worked on that regard.

Too many soft Euros in the leadership roles here. They got rid of one in Semin a few years back, next to go should be Backstrom. They need a Toews type here badly to go with Ovi.

Excellent point. Quick question. Backstrom is 6th in the league in scoring - who is available that Capitals should pick up to replace him?
