oooooooooh.....
honestly, i'm glad refs are taking more public heat. they have been corrupt

Y! SPORTS

“The refereeing... You understand it yourself. How can there be no penalties at all (on one team) during the playoffs?

“I am not saying there was a phone call from (the league), but someone just wanted Game 7. For the ratings. You know, the lockout, escrow, the League needs to make profit... I don't know whether the refs were predisposed against us or the League. But to not give obvious penalties (against the Capitals), while for us any little thing was immediately penalized...”

I'll admit I haven't watched much of the playoffs so far this year, but every time I do the refs are front and center. I caught a little bit of the Maple Leafs/Bruins earlier and wow. Rask smacks a guy in his face with his blocker and no call and then a few minutes later JVR gets hammered in the face by an elbow and again nothing. I'm not blaming the Maple Leafs loss on those non calls, the Maple Leafs flat out blew it, but I mean those two calls should have been as obvious as you can get and instead nothing. Sometimes it does make you wonder.

Bitching about referees gets old, in every sport. They are always inconsistent and people love to watch replays from several camera angles and second guess what they have to decide at full speed in real time.

I guess it is easier to blame officiating or to look for a conspiracy than admit you just didn't get the job done. I always prefer to take responsibility rather than give it to others. I have always thought that if something was my responsibility than it is in my power to change the outcome in the future.

:agree:

In most sports the officiating is no worse today then it was 20 years ago. It is just that we now have so much technology and 24 hour sport channels showing the replays 100 times.

So why doesn't EVERY series get 'officiated' into going seven games?

If it's in the League's interest, after all...

Yes, when you are part of the worst officiated series I've ever seen, it makes sense that your comments would be different than another guy not part of the series. Night in and night out obvious calls against us were missed while embellishment from the Rags or phantom/soft calls went against us.

It not only impacted the game directly with PP opportunities that led to goals and shifted momentum, but the Caps started playing differently in games 5 and 6, almost scared to create contact at times b/c of the concern over the refs. They put their hands up frequently as if to say 'look I'm not fouling him.'

In nearly 30 years of watching the Caps in the playoffs, I've never seen officiating have so much of an impact on a series.

We have choked away COUNTLESS series, none of which I ever felt were the fault of anyone but the coaches and players. This one would never have gone 7 games were it not for the refs.

If you guys want to pile on OV for being honest about that, then you clearly didn't watch this series and fuck off. I'm not a "refs are for the Pens" conspiracy person nor a person who likes ref complaining, but this series was different. They affected it. Its one thing if it's one night for this team and another night for the other. That was not the case here. It was a joke. A shameful, god damn joke.

Officiating across most professional sports is bad. It's just not possible to expect four middle-aged men to see every piece action going on. Most action in the NHL seems to occur in split seconds, anyways.

I'm not going to dump on OV for complaining about the obvious, because he is probably right in most cases. I don't think it's a conspiracy, though. The officials just cannot be expected to get each and every call correct. They're human, not machines.

alot of it can be done by machines however with those 4 on the ice. the NHL is more worried about hurting their feelings and egos by overturning calls on the ice. this could be cleaned up there is so much technology that they can catch everything. I mean they catch every little thing in the media that players do on benches and on the ice. why cant the league.

I wouldn't mind seeing them expand the replay review, and maybe pare down some of the dumb penalties, like the delay of game call.

I thought the Habs-Sens series was remarkably poorly officiated. Give some players penalties for embellishment even though they are still fighting for the puck then ignore some players when they flop like they are shot. Anytime Prust did anything - send him to the box then ignore other players doing the same thing. Something that is a penalty at some points during the game are not penalties at other points.

Two late phantom icing calls in game 4 in which saved valuable time. An offside goal in game 5.

Fun stuff. The Senators were better and healthier than the Habs and would have probably won no matter what, but that doesnt change the fact the officiating was terrible.

The refs should call the rules as written and be consistent from beginning to end (even in OT) and no matter who is involved in the play - star or rookie in first game.

This is pretty much how I feel about it, and pretty much what I was trying to say to my fellow Devils fans after game 6 of last years finals. I won't crucify anybody for being annoyed at the refs, because let's face it, shotty officiating can cost a team, but at the same time I prefer to look at it as, if it was meant to be we would have been able to overcome the refs ineptitude. How many chances did we not capitalize on? How many times did we shoot ourselves in the foot? How many shifts did guys take off? etc.

Im all for personal/team accountability but far too many teams/fans are pointing to questionable refereeing for my liking ... nhl needs to fix it ... its devolving into wwe type storylines

did the referee really miss what Kelly did to JVR last night ... caman! ... he needed a replay to figure out what happened when he was standing 15 feet away???

problem is its only going to get worse as nhl is having bigtime issues hiring/recruitung/training capable refs (kerry fraser even admitted to this)

I agree with OV. Not on that game itself but in general.

NHL refs are supposed to be the best in the world and routinely screw up calls and games.

i dont think Ive seen so many people on this board collectively agree on officiating as a whole. this is no coincidence.

On the same token how is that not interference and or holding. He is basically sitting on top of him and not trying to get up very fast. I do agree that for sure a penalty could have been called on Kelly but JVR could have been called as well.
