Does anyone else find Ryan Mallett intriguing?

He strikes me as a strong armed dude who could be coached up and play damn well within a system.

as a bear fan or a lions fan?

There is no understudy, Jay does not help the young QB's along. It would be like Favre in Green Bay with Rodgers, not even acknowledging he is on the sideline. We have seen it before with Jason Campbell.

As a Lions fan.

Id take a lifetime of Cutler(as a Bears fan) over Winston. How many running plays have been called the last two weeks?

Cutler is no Montana, but it's pretty hard for me to blame him for the recent L's. As much fun as it is for someone like myself to rip on him, he's waaaay down the list of issues, IMO.

His injury should keep his market value down too. Not because of lingering concerns. Just from lack of spotlight.

Thats our biggest question as bear fans, how many have been called and how many have been audibled out of.

Apparently, they go watch film the day after the game and nobody is telling Jay he was wrong in audibling out of a run, even though they arent getting enough first downs.

Aidiot- you keep do this... taking major leaps. You or I don't know what is going on in meetings. As a Cutler fan I've read and devoured just about every interview and info on him since he has been a Bear and to a man... every coach and teammate has said he's great/smart in meetings and knows football. You could take that as backing their guy, but I don't think as many would go out of their way in defending him to that account. I don't buy it.
Also you and I don't know what the play call was, what it should be audibled into or out of. I blame the OLINE and Running game as a whole they can't get it done... If Jay is part of that, he get's part of it too.

Hard to say. I haven't actually seen him play. Certainly possible. I wouldn't get mad if Cutler was traded for picks (yeah right) and then we signed him. I'd rather try an experiment than a known outcome (no Super Bowl).

Not sure what the big deal is about not the running the ball?

  • We were down 38-7 at the half against NE. And that game we actually ran the ball well (in garbage time) with 5.8 ypc. Hoodie let us run since it accomplished less than passing.
  • We were down 42-zip at the half vs GB. 3.5 ypc.
  • Things were closer in the DET game, down 24-14 at the half. But at 2.0 ypc, should we really have stayed with the run game?
  • Same deal against DAL. Close game at half-time 14-7. But with their 3 quick TD to go up 35-7 in the 3rd qtr, sticking to a run game that was getting 2.0 ypc was not going to cut into the Cowboys' lead.
Sorry, but the game situations did not dictate running the ball.

I guess you have to take what the defense gives you. But it seems one sided to me.

Joe, even early on, before they were behind, it has been nearly rush-free though. Obviously Im not as invested in the games as any of you guys, but I watch more bears games than I don't. Just seems like they are fine with short yardage passing replacing the run. Too much so IMO.

I loved him coming out of an Arkansas, as a mid-round flyer. When NE snagged him, I thought he was destined to take over for Brady and do a great job.

I figured he'd give Houston a boost offensively when he came in, and he did just that. I get the feeling they'll hang onto him.

Its all about who is deciding what they are taking. I mean taking what they are giving you is fine for the teams that are not full of all pro receivers, running back and a quarterback that believes he is elite. The players this team has, there should be a point of taking what you want when this much is invested in the offense.

Bronco- you're right they have never been a good run team this year...but they knew that going in... I think they planed to use the pass to set up the run. That doesn't work when your WR's are all injured the first week and can't get separation the rest of the season. I can count on one hand the number of times that a WR wasn't contested in a route down field (hell anywhere) Watching Jordy Nelson last night- when have you seen one of our WR that open deep?

Thats what got us in this current position, all the holes that require more desperate measures which has us picking quarterbacks that nobody wants late in the draft. This year we got David Fales after losing Enderle last year. He has promise but isnt enough that somebody wants to claim him off the practice squad. Thats the same thing they will try with a 3-5 round pick.

Sitting behind Jay, will give a young QB a chance to learn the pro offense, not necessarily from Jay, but from the coaching staff, by sitting in on QB sessions with Jay, learning how to be a pro QB by watching Jay, who is an NFL caliber QB, just not an elite one.

I read and have listened to a few long discussions on why College QB's are failing at the NFL level. They point to the fact (last they I listened to on the subject was Dilfer) that the College Offensive set is not an NFL Offensive Set, far from it. That college QB's throw to the primary target 70% + of the time, while that percentage in the NFL is down around 30% of the time. QB's have to learn what the NFL is about, and sadly there is hardly a way to look at the College ranks and figure out if a QB can do it, from a scouting perspective. This is one of the reason that since 2009, 72 QB's have been drafted and only a handful are better than Jay.

That make sense, but it also makes sends that NFL teams like the bears are not willing to commit to a quarterback to develop enough to keep him on the roster. There used to be an emergency quarterback allowed, dont know if it is anymore, but as long as the bears decide to keep their developmental guy on the practice squad where he can be signed by any team at any time, we are not gonna have a guy like that. Next year if Fales is still here, it might be required to give him a roster spot, then we get to see if there is actual commitment to developing the guy. You take the guy in the first or second round, you pretty much are forced to keep him on the 53 man.

Anyway, cant argue with success of Rodgers waiting under Farve and Brady displacing Bledsoe and not given the job out of the draft. Titans might have struck gold with their sixth round pick, but you just cant count on that happening, especially with our talent evaluators.

Still can't quite let go of Cutler. It's weird.

I admit, there's still apart of me that hopes he stays and bounces back. If Rivers can turn it around, I believe Jay stands a chance.

Or at least… that's how I justify this strange attachment I have to the guy. :gaah:

I'm with you, Rich. That was kind of the subtle message behind this thread. A good QB is not easy to find. And maybe Jay isn't "good" to some, but he's better than what is available - and he has had flashes of greatness.

gulp...OK...thanks a lot richig, you are now forcing me into the extremely uncomfortable position of praising Phil Rivers, who I don't even like as a QB and consider the biggest whiner in the NFL....but with your comment, you leave me no choice.

Phil Rivers didn't have to "turn it around" to be a success at a level beyond anything Cutler has ever sniffed. He is 87-54 as a QB, has taken his team to the playoffs on many occasions, and has won several games in the playoffs. Along the way, he had numerous really good seasons. I would LOVE to be able to draw an analogy to Phil Rivers from Jay Cutler. But.....it just can't be done. This is sacrilege to even try.

And making me stand up for Phil Rivers....goddamnit man, I am not gonna forgive you for this for a long time...

Perhaps, wood20. But with coaches and some GM's on the hotseat in the next few weeks, old regimes and player philosophies are about to change. You never know which team will want to make a splash to right their ship and try to win immediately.
