I was talking with a buddy of mine about this after watching last night's episode of Family Guy. On the show, Peter makes a joke about the the 80s producing some horrible music, including "the gayest video ever." It was Dancing in the Streets by David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Then they showed the video. I'd forgotten how gay this was. Flaming.

This video is often associated with that title.

I voted for the 70s and would have twice. I hate disco and really hate Zeppelin and most of the other 70s arena rock bands.

Next I would have voted for the 90s. I think current music is much better than the 90s were though that may just because there are so many more ways to discover and listen to music now as opposed to then.

Music jumped the shark in the '00s with the advent and proliferation of the auto-tune audio processor. Now any tone-deaf hack doesn't even need to sing on key to produce commercial music. That got my vote for '00s hands down.

I'd also like to add that the true alternative rock, the stuff that fed the 90s mainstream alternative music, was better in the mid-late 80s while it was still underground and didn't even have a name.

I think you are dead on, it's just the labeling that cracks me up. "Alternative" was a category/genre with a limited shelf life from the get go.

00s - Some good "crunchy" stuff. I'm too old to know the rest of the highlights of this past decade. Somebody help me out.

The 2000s were awesome, because The White Stripes were in them.

Just curious, if people were going to rank order them, what would it be. For me (top first, bottom last):

60s, 90s, 50s, 00s, 80s, 70s

unfortunately, they were the exception.

White Stripes / Raconteurs, The Black Keys, the Twilight Singers maybe Silversun Pickups are pretty much the only bands that jump out from that decade that have brought something interesting to the table.
I'm sure there are more, but those ones are the very few that jump out.

Dear lord. I tend to catch some shit when Squire comes on and I turn it up. This doesn't help my case.

I can buy the argument of vocal bastardization; Ke$ha probably couldn't last a day without auto-tune. I'll say this however: There were so many incredible natural singers that Simon Cowell was able to make a mint in the 2000s by parading them around like circus performers. Combining that with the commercial successes of actual talents like Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga (pre-Born This Way), Josh Groban, and a third-peak Mariah Carey in the 00-09 time frame, and I'd say it was a wash overall in that department.

Oh, come on, after Mariah got divorced she peaked WAY more than three times. ;)

As long as it's The Stroke, or Everybody Wants You, you're fine. :)

lol, it certainly helped. I remember the video as a kid but had forgotten about a lot of it. A few years ago I read an article about it and the point of the article was the video really did hurt his career.

I'll see your natural talents in the 2000s and raise you all-in with the Disney-whored-whore "talent", plus the Black Eyed Peas.
