That goal Jones made was fucking nice. Completely froze the goalie. That didn't look like it was going in.

All Italy needs is a tie, I could easily see a neutral zone Trappatoni tomorrow...

yah ... reputation lol

One of the worse incidents of cooking things up between two teams occurred in the 1982 World Cup.

West Germany had been stunned in the group stage by Algeria.

Germany played Austria in the final game. The only result that could prevent Algeria from becoming the first African nation to move into the second round of a World Cup was a 1-0 German victory. West Germany and Austria would then both go through.

The Germans scored in the first 10 minutes of the game. Both team basically stood around for the other 80 minutes.

It was one of the most disgusting exhibitions ever seen in the game.

I don't think there's a single player on the German squad that was even born then (OK, so I looked it up and there are 2: the 3rd string goaltender and Klose. Side note: I feel old), so that's probably not a fair comparison.

And the kinds of questions that would get raised if the teams played to a perfect tie with Klinsmann running the show.

I think the Germans will be out to prove that their draw vs. Ghana was a fluke.

On the first goal, it looked like he got over quickly and expected the quick shot, and when he noticed the shot hadn't come yet, he lost his balance. On the tying goal, once he decided not to play the pass, he was dead in the water. His only chance would have been to get hit in the chest with it.

this. I don't think either of the goals were on Howard. His only true gaffe from my perspective was fanning on the shot that hit the post. He got lucky and then made a great save so I can forgive him for that.

Fair enough.

However, I'm in full on USA mode. We're fielding a damn good competitve team. It's great to see us hanging tough in the "Group of Death". It was heartbreaking to come out with a tie yesterday, but who the hell would have seen that happening prior to the start of the tourney?

That being said, I hope the US play their heart out and fight for that win and don't settle for a tie (if they even have the chance to settle). I like our style of play on the international level.

The only play i thought Howard screwed the pooch on didnt cost him

it was in the final 10 minutes and a high lofted ball in the box which bruno alves reached out at and amazingly made contact and put it into the side netting about a foot wide of the post ... Howard played that so nonchalantly that i think if alves somehow managed to put it on target it would have snuck in

I don't know that he stops the first, but he definitely made it easier by going down so early.

ya.. I guess I'm just not that upset at that one because Nani by himself 12 yards out is probably going to score 97 times out of 100.

Oh very true unless your last name is Bradley then the odds go down to 10 out of 1000 times.

What's pretty exciting about this group currently is the age. There are 20-23 year olds making an impact. That and every game they win is encouraging some 14 year old to play harder to try to be a part of the next one.
