I'm gonna start reading them tonight. There's actually a LifeTime movie on JKR tonight. I'll be watching the Buccos game for the most part, but that could be interesting. I mean she was pretty poor before HP...now she's richer than the queen.

This is very odd. I thought it would be more documentary'y, but it's like reenactment of her life.

It's not that bad. I mean, her life was a LifeTime movie.

Gotta say, if that's how Jo got married...I lost a wee bit of respect. Still my favorite author...but really?

****CONTAINS SPOILERS****

****CONTAINS SPOILERS****

Okay, so I have a kind of unique position seeing the movie this evening. I read all the books.... except the last one. I got about 100 pages into it, got a little bored with it, and never picked it back up again. Amazingly, I avoided finding out the ending until seeing the movie tonight.

I thought the first 2/3 of the movie was really solid. Like the others, it was fun and creative, but had some dark features to it. Then came the ending. I have to say as a reader... I don't really like how the story ended. As a movie goer, it was even worse. Lots of confusing things that were maybe obvious to readers of the book, but a movie should never require that. I spent the last 15 minutes not understanding why Harry had to die (voldemort not knowing he was a horcrux) when it brought us right back to where we were before that - with Voldemort thinking he was down to only one, the snake. The "heaven" part was disruptive. And once he had the stone, great, but he didn't have the wand yet, so how did he master death?

I'm not sure if I'm unsasitisfied with the ending Rowling wrote, or just think the movie did a poor job conveying it. The moment you find out Harry was going to be a sacrificial lamb was so impactful, that I thought having him live made the story/movie worse. He should have died, sacrificed himself, and enabled someone else to kill Voldemort. I thought the ending kinda sucked in that way.

So, I enjoyed most of the movie, but I think Rowling sucks at endings. We all did it b/c we're friends and love beats hate, etc. etc. Themes no more complex than Winnie the Pooh. Harry should have died. It would have been better.

****** MORE SPOILERS *******

Also, why was the magic in the final fight so lame? One of Draco's goons creates fire monsters that consume a huge room and Harry/Voldemort are at one point wrestling each other? You're fucking wizards. I thought the spells in the final scene could have been much cooler.

The laser wizard beam version of tug-of-war to end it was pretty pedestrian. And then when Harry can dust him, Voldemort literally becomes dust. Where was the "this one's for my parents, bitch!" moment. Fucking lame.

I havent seen the movie yet but I am curious if Mrs. Weasley has her big line at the end like she did in the book. The one with the bad word in it.

Best part of the movie tonight...

"19 Years Later" comes up on the screen.

Guy in the row behind me says "Oh.. shit!" real loud so the whole theater could hear as he reads it. Pretty frickin' funny. I wasn't really sure why he was so surprised, but it cracked a bunch of us up.

Yes.

BTW, I thought they could have gotten a bit more serious with this last movie. Most of it was pretty good, but it had potential to be incredible. Spielberg should have taken this last movie and turned it into a more dramatic, "Saving Private Ryan," type of last battle. There were too many corny lines in the end to convince me that this was a momentous end to a monumental story.

I agree that the final fight between Harry and Voldy was pretty much mailed in. Excuse me, but this is the last fucking movie of what... 5 or 6? I stopped counting. I should have had goosepimples on my teeth. Dragons should have been shooting out of Emma Watson's crotch. Fire and torture and body parts. Earth splitting and unicorns spitting blood. Atreyu, Luke, Obi Wan, Yoda, Gandolf, should have formed an epic army just over the horizon - their charge causing an earthquake and lightening.

Ugh... it could have been so much better.

Cool, I liked that in the book.

I was worried that they would remove it from the movie. Its not often an older woman uses the word cock when talking about a teenager in a PG-13 movie.

I for one am tremendously pleased Spielberg had nothing to do with this series.

(I post that not because I thought the end battle was great, I haven't seen it, I just think later Spielberg is pretty bland and safe)

Well... he's the only one I would trust with such a large film. He's done a pretty damn good job on many other films. Don't you agree?

I look at his work the last 20 years and I am very underwhelmed, particularly his fun movies which used to be his strong point.

I really do not think he would have been suited for any movie in this series with the possible exception of the first.

Yeah, I agree. Also, what's up with the conciliatory Voldemort towards the end? "Okay, we've destroyed the chose one, now who wants to join us. We'll even relax the bloodline rules a little." Wouldn't Potter's allies be filled with rage and strike at him? Wouldn't Voldemort be psyched Harry Potter was gone and destroy the few remaining people who had opposed him to set an example? This is a guy who had killed people at the thought of their allegience not being with him or just on a whim. It just didn't work for me. Don't know if that's in the book or an invention of the movie.

You may have a point.

Let me just say that I would rather have had someone take this movie to a more dramatic, epic level. Maybe Peter Jackson should have made the last film. IDK. All I know is that I left the theater thinking that the ending could have been better.
