I honestly think I loved the Gary Oldman character more than the book character. He was fun, and I think, like you, I loved that he was someone for Harry that was basically family. I loved that Harry finally found someone.

I just couldn't handle his immaturity - in that way, I thought he was well-written, but I couldn't fall in love with him the way some people did.

I understand that people found it grating, but it was also realistic.

Please tell me why you like Sirius Black. I'm not going to try to change your opinion or anything; I just want someone to let me know what they like about him.

I would agree with that, it was just too much teenage angst for me. I like most of the parts you mention but when I think of the book the first thing I think of is the part I don't like.

SPOILERS

Yeah in the book, it's done differently. Voldemort doesn't "ask" people to come over. He says something along the lines of - The house of my ancestor will be good enough for everyone now (meaning Slytherin obv) - and then summons the Sorting Hat, presumably to destroy it since he's calling for no more Sortings.

Neville trying to be a boss, and rallies the crowd with cheers of Dumbledore's Army. Then, Voldemort basically is like who the hell are you...Neville tells him...Voldie is all "Cool, pureblood" and tries to get him to come over to his side. Neville says he'll join him when Hell freezes over.

Then Voldemort paralyzes him (temporarily) and puts the Sorting Hat on his head and sets it on motherfucking fire. The paralyzing doesn't keep because Harry "died" to protect them all, so Voldemort's spells aren't having any staying power. So Neville takes the Sword of Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat (which appears because Neville is a brave badass in need) and slices the head off the damn Snake.

So in the book, Voldemort doesn't let Neville have this long soliloquy. He's basically making an example out of him and torturing him for the hell of it.

which sounds alot better than what actualy occured. when Neville was talking I expected that is what he was trying to do and would do. but theatrics works better for suspense in a movie (R/H going after the snake and almost failing until Neville saves them all)

in reality Neville killed Voldemort :) hes the true hero

At first when he didn't kill it, I thought they were going to have someone else do it (probably Hermione knowing Kloves), so I was very happy they didn't fuck up that part.

i hated umbridge more completely and deeply than i have ever hated any character in any book that i have ever read, including wuthering heights, where i hated everyone. i hoped voldemort would take her out in a random act of violence. no demise for her would have been satisfying enough.

re: sirius. i'm sure a lot of the love for sirius comes from gary oldman's portrayal. simply put, the man is a genius actor. his facial expressions for harry are so genuine and warm. he can say a million things with a small shift in his smile. amazing. utterly.

i did love sirius in the book for all the reasons you listed that you hated him. i love that he was fatally flawed yet so dedicated and loyal to harry. i loved that he was willing to make stupid and wrong decisions, to risk himself to make harry happy. his raw emotion and desperation in the book was so palpable i couldn't help rooting for him.

sirius seemed like the type of friend that was that loose cannon. you loved him, hated him and feared for him all at the same time. being abandoned by and hated by his family, hating and abandoning his family. he was an orphan every bit as much as harry was. he was reckless but you were somehow drawn to him. maybe it was just charisma, but there was a deeper hurt there. you knew he was doomed, and that made you love him even more.

I just finished reading PoA and the whole time I'm thinking, "Why didn't you just go to Lupin when you got out and show him the picture of Peter. Presumably if you can recognize him as a rat, so can he." Obviously, that wouldn't have made quite as exciting as a narrative. I think he is stuck in that arrested development phase because of how he grew up and where he spent his young adulthood. So very well-written, just so rash that I can't like him as much as everyone else. So heartwrenching when Harry thinks he's going to be able to live with him.

something I missed in Part 2. SPOILERS

when Voldemort "killed" harry in the forest and Dracos mother went to check she knew Harry was alive but it seemed she was asking Draco if he was and Harry nodded? I just dont get that part? any potheads that read the book care to assist me in figuring that out?

Draco was in the castle taking part in the battle and she knew this. She was asking Harry if he was still alive (of course Harry had saved his life so he was) or if he had died in the battle. She no longer cared about who had won at this point, and just wanted her son back. She knew the only way the fighting would stop and they would be allowed to all go to Hogwarts (and she could collect Draco) was as part of the victorious army. So she lied.

A nice tie-in with JKR's "doing the right thing comes back to help you" theme.

He is scared. He has no idea what happened and doesn't want to risk it, in this particular instance.

And this scene goes back to the overarching theme of the series which is love. Voldemort doesn't understand love, so he doesn't understand that Narcissa would lie to him (risk dying herself if Voldemort found out and had time to kill her) to get to her son. He thinks that the devotion his followers have to him, his power, is a more...well...powerful force.
