Who likes chili? I found this old family recipe for chili and thought I would share it with you.

Funny story actually; my grandfather learned this recipe in prison. He did a two-year stint at the Maryland State Penitentiary for selling fake bottles of whiskey during prohibition. Basically, his caper was he would go to the train station and try to sell bottles of whiskey as the train was departing. By the time they discovered the whiskey was in fact tea the train had already left. Eventually he sold some to the wrong person and was caught and sent to prison where he worked in the kitchen.

There was another cook, a Spaniard out of Tulsa, who taught my grandfather the recipe. It was relatively quick and easy to make and the inmates all loved it. So, when the two years were up he left prison leaving his criminal life behind and with a new recipe written on a folded index card.

The third weekend home from prison my grandfather made the chili for the whole family and they all loved it. Over the years they would often have it at family gatherings and everyone looked forward to it. Then in the early 60s during a move (I assume music from the time was playing) the recipe was lost. There were tries to replicate /recreate the recipe but it was never the same. They even hired a psychic to no avail.

Meanwhile in the 19th century the first transatlantic telegraph cable is laid. But that’s not important now.

If my grandparent's move would have been better planned they may not have lost the famed recipe. See - my grandfather liked to go to the track. Over the years he lost lots of money he could not afford to. One day in the early 60s he won a longshot trifecta, choosing horses after a couple of his kid's birthdays, and walked out of there with $14,000. He bought a house the next week and moved soon after. They moved so fast they "forgot" to let my father know and when he came back from the navy he went to the old house. My grandfather never went to the track again.

In the mid-80s the long-lost recipe was found! We were painting and moved a shelf (imagine The Power Of Love playing) and there it was, it had fallen under the shelf during the move. Great news! The following weekend the chili was made and we all had a great time. My brother fell down the steps and shattered his fibula, what a great day.

Time passed, my grandparents died in quick succession a few years later and their stuff was boxed up in a hurry. My father had some of the boxes and when he passed away I took them but did not go through them for a couple of years. When I did I found the recipe and some naked photos of a woman that looked kind of like Anne Margaret. I put the photos in a safe place and made the chili the following week. My wife and he

So here it is, the famous chili recipe taken verbatim from the index card:

2 lbs ground beef (chuck or round, whatever you like)
1 can crushed tomatoes (maybe diced?)
1 packet seasoning (MD PEN has McCormick, others might be good too)
Cook and mix.
Add beans if you want. Serve on a plate or in a bowl. Maybe a mug? Enjoy!

I hope you all enjoy this recipe as much as we did!
