Now the Giants burn an option year on both Harrison and Meckler (unless they somehow bring either or both up before the 20 day window is over).

The Harrison demotion is baffling. The only thing that comes to mind (and I really don’t want to go there with this) is some deep sabotage by FZ to make sure Harry hits FA earlier when FZ is with his next org. I doubt that is a factor, but if FZ had the future of the Giants in mind, I really don’t see him making this move.

We took notice of this rule last year, but to be honest, I have not heard a peep about it outside of here since. Are we even 100% certain it is still a thing?

That is a very good question. I did a brief search at mlb.com and it only has one sentence on this page: Minor League Options | Glossary | MLB.com.
"(Players may only be optioned five times per season; after that, it requires outright assignment waivers to assign the player to the Minor Leagues.)"

I did find this article from last year on Bleacher Nation. It means that this is part of the CBA so I assume it is still in effect.

So ... the rule has changed in the new CBA, but because the new CBA took so long to complete, the adjustment has been effectively neutered for the entire first full season.
