Options tracker 2023

With transaction crazed Farhan at the wheel, it may be worth tracking options used again this season. Unlike last year, there is no month set aside for freebie options (Players may only be optioned five times per season; after that, it requires outright assignment waivers to assign the player to the Minor Leagues). They count from spring training forward. So here is the options count for each player who have had at least one option thus far:

I am tracking on my own but am using the team website's transaction page as a source.

Good question on Mathias, didn't think to look him up. He has been optioned 3 times now (3/27; 5/8; 6/19).

His assignment to Sacramento doesn't count as an option, from my understanding, because he was already in AAA when he was traded. I also think his assignment by the Mariners did not count as an option as he was claimed off waivers while in AAA. I could be wrong on both counts. If so, he doesn't have any options left without being exposed to waivers again

It makes logical sense that an “option” equates to a move from MLB to the minors, not just a shuffle from one org to another.

And looking at his player page on mlb.com, neither assignment is listed as an option so I think it is safe to say he still has two options left on the year.

If either Hjelle or Ramos (or both) are recalled by the Giants, they must keep them on the active roster through the end of the season (or put them on the IL) or risk losing them on waivers. Of course, with the way Hjelle has pitched and the Giants seeming view on Ramos, they may not care to lose either at this point.

Can't see them recalling Hjelle, but I think Ramos is back Friday.

Hes hitting .300 since his last call up and raised his OPS 20 points.

Really good point. Hope they bring him back up before 20 days are up. Considering his lack of professional experience, this could be a really boneheaded move.
