To simplify this, I think it safe to say there are only 5 jobs "open"...

1 Bullpen - Kontos, Machi, Okert

BU Catcher - Susac, Sanchez

#4/#5 OF - Perez, Maxwell, Ishikawa

#2 Util - Adrianza, Duffy

I agree that JCP started to click in the Series last year. I like him, I just think that the loss of Pence means they will want to add power, and that means Maxwell, Duvall or Parker. Mac and Carbonell are not ready.
Well, they let a golden opportunity slip by for that by failing to deal for Upton. Perez has shown some power in the Minors though, so we'll see I guess.

Taking Sandoval out of the heart of this lineup totally changes the over-all strategy. We will be seeing a LOT of opposing bullies this season. I anticipate a lot fewer FPOMs and a lot more beautiful ABs. The GDTs should be rather boring without all the Sandoval-bitching :)

I don't know. Maybe at one time it would have but he has become a .270 hitter with middling power, a low on base percentage and a double play machine. The problem though is that they replaced him with someone who is much worse and tried to make us believe we got lemonade instead of a lemon..

Never mind the fact that the Giants never could have or should have, matched the package the Padres put together for Upton.

Other than that, though... Yea...

I missed where the Giants said that McGehee was an equivalent to better player than Sandoval. Do you have a link to that article?

Why? Players like Upton who are established right-handed power hitters don't grow on trees. Especially when the had a huge hole in LF to fill. Maybe one out of 20 prospects pans out, but we already know Upton can play.

And what package would the Giants have been able to put together that would have competed with the package the Padres put together?

I don't know. That would be up to Sabean. I'm sure the Giants minor league system cannot be completley devoid of talent.

Dude, look at the package they gave up. A system does not have to be "devoid of talent" to not be able to compete with that package. That was a MONSTEROUS package that they gave to Atlanta. All for ONE year of Upton.

The Padres are trying to make a statement to their fan-base that they are serious. The Padres org has been a joke for so long that the fans have no reason to trust them. They HAVE to go "all-in" in order to get their attention.

The Giants have earned the right to manage their assets the right way, and not make STUPID trades to win the off-season.

Yeah, the one and done thing would be a definite concern. A sign and trade deal would have been the only way to go.

That's an excellent point; I missed it in my first reading of your post. The Padres don't have a record of recent succes to bank on like the Giants do. The Padres have a new management team in place who feel like they have to make an immediate splash. Different situations, but I don't see the Giants window for success lasting much longer than two more seasons; at least with this current core of guys so I'd have liked to see them take more of a "win now" approach in the last off season..
