I'm still pissed at the Graves slash that took Lemieux out of the playoffs (mainly because I had Mario in my playoff pool and that slash and resultant injury likely cost me a few hundred dollars).

/Oh, I'm sure the Penguins and their fans were upset for other more important reasons.

That slash was bad but watching Lemieux act like it instantly paralyzed him and falls to the ice was comical(after the anger from losing him passed). Broken hand was bad but he was embellishing for what its worth.

I can't believe you didn't mention Claude Lemieux taking a bite out of Jim Peplinski's hand during the playoffs. :D

Oh I am sure it did. Graves hit him hard. I just remember seeing it in slow motion and Lemieux's reaction seemed a little dramatic. Broken hands shouldn't make you fall down.

Actually, that incident didn't bug me as much as when that little turtle scored the OT winner in game 7 against the Hartford Whalers to deny me another big playoff pool payday (I had loaded up on Whalers that playoff year).

This goal probably was the catalyst to the demise of the Whalers franchise (who knows, it could have been a Hartford - Calgary SCF instead of Habs - Flames in '86).

Maybe Neal will become the modern day Claude Lemieux!

I can only wish

I give him credit, although he's top five most disliked ever for me, he was a great player. His dirty play ruined him for a lot of people.

I'm going to assume you didn't see the game. It had looked like they had agreed to fight a few seconds before at the right face off circle before skating to the net where the incident you're taking about happened. Rinaldo dropped the gloves and went after Roussel. Roussel never dropped his and Rinaldo was penalized for his actions according to the rules. What Rinaldo didn't do was go headhunting which I thought was the topic of conversation.

Yeah, as far as the individual situation, while I appreciate the info, all I'm really trying to say is the guy is a goon. It's what he does and why he has a place on the Flyers. He's there to incite violence and hence, stupid penalties. He has a history at it, and begrudgingly I will admit he is pretty good at it.

I just want to show you how ridiculous the point your attempting to make with your example is.

Yep that is your golden boy jumping a totally unsuspecting player and taking liberties, so by your logic and analyzing one situation without caring about the context Sid is also a goon.

He's a goon bud. To deny that is ridiculous. To use a former scoring champion as your example of what it is exactly you're tying to prove I'm not really sure, is even more ridiculous.

The point is you are making a statement that you admit you don't care about the context of the situation. If a person who knew nothing about hockey looked at the video of both incidents I highly doubt they would see much a difference. I really shouldn't be surprised by your comments though because from the first post of yours that I've seen in this thread you've quickly tried to divert attention from Neal blatantly targeting a players head again. I get that you hate the Flyers and their players and you may be trying to somewhat defend Neal because he's on your favorite team but if you are trying to make an intelligent point you can't say you don't care about the context of the example that you're using.

Pretty much everything you said there ironically sums you up to me, as well. You don't care about the context of the situation either, because if you had actually read what I said here, the conclusion that you would have arrived at would be different. Glad we can agree that we aren't going to agree. :suds:

Allow me to try to resolve this argument.

Goon behavior can be, on occasion, exhibited by non-goon players. We call these losses of control and poor decisions. Their periodic nature combined with the player's other capabilities (i.e. filling roles like goal scoring, play making, etc. outside of the realm of "goonery") preclude that player from being designated a goon.

A goon as often defined by hockey fans is someone whose role on the team centers largely to exclusively around agitation and goon-like behaviors. These players seldom bring appreciable offensive contributions to the team, and play many fewer minutes than players like those described above.

So Crosby in that clip is exhibiting goon-like behaviors, but since those behaviors are uncommon for him (especially recently), and since he contributes as a point-producer (more than anyone in the league, in fact), he is not classified a goon and does not fall into evolver's argument. In that moment, one could call Crosby a goon; however, that definition does not fit his full body of work in the NHL.

Not being a goon, of course, does not excuse a player for criticism of goonish plays, though. Fortunately, Crosby has grown up, and you don't see him doing that sort of thing anymore. He still occasionally gets frustrated and does something stupid, but it's never as blatant as that.

Exactly! Thanks Dark for clarifying my point since I never called Crosby a goon (if anything he's a bitch  ). I was merely trying to point out that without knowing the full context of a given situation it is easy to jump to a conclusion that may not be true. In my mind the term goon is reserved for guys like John Scott who is completely worthless on the ice and likes to seek out and intentionally try to injure skilled players (like the attack on Kessel & the headhunting elbow on Louie Ericcson). A guy like Rinaldo while not a big point producer does other beneficial things for a team like proved energy, supply physical play and at times kill penalties. Rinaldo has been guilty of doing goonish things like most 4th liners but he is not really a dirty player IMO and he is known more for good solid legal body checks instead of head hunting.

Rinaldo's pretty borderline to me. He's probably more of an agitator than a goon, but that line itself is very blurry. I may be remembering someone else and replacing his name with Rinaldo's, but I thought he had a bit of a history from the last couple years of being over the line on less-rare-than-desirable occasions, but has moved a bit out of that realm this season.
