Not sure why they couldn't buy him out...unlike an injured player, this is a case of a player making a poor life decision. I can understand the NHLPA still offering help in form of rehab, but why in the world can't they buy him out?
Any player who is unable to play, the NHLPA will stand behind.
Because if they deny this and allow him to be bought out, then LTIR can be invalidated because playing the way Pronger played could be argued as a "Poor life decision" which led to him being incapacitated.
There's going to be legal wrangling too because substance abuse is classified in a lot of jurisdictions as a disability.
I'm sure they've been on the phone with the lawyers a lot about this one.
