Yeah I am thinking around 3-4 years after he turns 30.
The other part here he is banking on the Sabres to be a Playoff team.

I’ve said a few times that Buffalo is in a good spot to offer sheet someone (even if that STL pick is now basically a 2nd rounder).

I’m not really sure the best move here wasn’t to just wait it out and try to overpay an RFA. For a team that already has a pretty bad winger contract on the books long term, if this goes south that’s a lot of dead weight to be spending $15 mil in cap space on. Throw in Reinhart’s extension after next season and they’re going to be spending somewhere around $22 mil on three wingers and may not be much better off offensively as they are at the moment. Big risk.

Patrick Kane is the leader with 113, Alex Ovechkin has 112 and Skinner is tied with John Tavares and Vladimir Tarasenko at 106. That's one more than Connor McDavid, four more than Brad Marchand, five ahead of Nikita Kucherov and seven ahead of Sidney Crosby.

Obviously that's presented without context of games played in that same span, age, or total points, but it's no secret that goals = paychecks more than anything else for the overwhelming majority of forwards.

Skinner had the team over a barrel and he knew it. For a team that's been struggling (to put it nicely), letting a 40 goal scorer walk away for nothing wasn't an option.

I also don't doubt that Eichel probably was less than enthused with the idea of really the only good winger he's had leaving after one season with no guarantee of an incoming replacement. It was a tough spot, for sure.

I guess I look at JVR getting $7 mil last year and think Skinner, while younger, isn't all that much better than him (arguably at all). I get Philly isn't Buffalo either but also Skinner is a Toronto boy, playing close to home should count for something if playing in a lower-rung market doesn't.

Agreed. The age difference I think accounts for most of the difference, though there is definitely something of a small-market-tire-fire multiplier in there.

And just adding to Skinner's leverage, there was literally no way for them to get that many goals back in UFA from a single guy. No way on fucking earth that Panarin ends up in Buffalo and would cost more anyway (worth it, he's a better player). Duchene is (and always was) going to get similar and will put up fewer goals (a more well-rounded player), Pavelski is 34 (and also no way in hell he ends up in Buffalo).

Yeah, the BJs at least have some upside to not re-signing him.

I know keeping your own pick isn't exactly a gain per se, but he doesn't walk away for nothing if they can't re-sign him.
