It's also front-loaded real money-wise, I guess to make him somewhat desirable to budget teams trying to reach the floor after those 4 years.

is this one of those buy-out proof contracts with up front bonus money?

/another clarkson comparable

People thought the Flames overpaid for Frolik during free agent frenzy last summer - JA is making essentially the same money as Frolik for two more years (and Frolik has more points than JA over the last two seasons combined).

The way I'm looking at it is if the Leafs were to give Leo Komarov a 7 year deal. I think people would try to attack Shanahan and Louie Lams on the street if they did that, but all I'm hearing is how great a deal this is from Detroit's POV.

Because you don't give 7 year contracts to players who don't produce offence??? If you're getting that much time on the PP and on the first line, you should be scoring at the very least 50 points a year. Abdelkader is turning 29 and his career average pts/82 is 27.6 pts and he's on pace for less than 40 this season.

The things you use to defend him - "leader", "plays hard", "hits", "blocks shots", "fights", "grinds", "kills penalties"...you telling me they couldn't have found that elsewhere not only for shorter term but for cheaper than $4.25m?

And for the record, Duncan Keith makes $5 million/yr, which is 24% less than the $6.5 mil avg on Karlsson's deal. But as usual, your comparisons are totally relevant and on point :thumb:

RE: "produce offence" - Battling for pucks in the offensive zone corners, creating havoc in front of the net, screening the goalie, forcing the defense to sag down to open up passing lanes for other guys... those are all examples of things Abdelkader does every shift to "produce offense" for his teammates. Those things don't necessarily show up in the score sheet, but are keys to every offense. Those are also the reasons Zetterberg and Datsyuk WANT him on the top line with them.

RE: "elsewhere" - The Red Wings organization takes care of their own... yes, sometimes to a fault. Again, I would have given him 5 years. I thought 7 was a bit long, but I'm not mad that he got 7. In fact, I'm happy for him because hard working do-everything guys like Abdelkader deserve to be compensated a little more than they usually are. Abdelkader was born and raised in Michigan. Drafted by Detroit in the 2nd round. He scored the NCAA Championship game winning goal for Michigan State. He put in work at Grand Rapids before earning a spot on the Wings 4th line and eventually climbing all the way up to the first line. He's a Michigan guy through and through. He has kept building his game to be an all-around great asset to the team. The score sheet does not reflect his overall impact to the organization or the community. He's most likely the first guy in line for the "A" on his sweater when Datsyuk hangs up his skates and could very possibly wear the "C" when Zetterberg does. It's not a bad deal to have strong-candidate future-team-captain locked-up at a $4.25M cap hit.

RE: Keith/Karlsson - Keith actually makes $7.5M this year, his cap hit is $5.538M because his 13-year contract runs until he turns 40 and the final three years of his deal are all under $3M. Karlsson actually makes $7M this year. All that moot contract structure aside, do you think Karlsson is worth 29% more than Keith because he tallies 29% more points? Would you pay Karlsson 29% more if the contract numbers were in your hands? You know that was my point and danced around it with semantics, as usual. You're a pretty good politician.

So he's Tomas Holmstrom. Who never made more than $2.2 million in his career. Or signed a 7 year deal. And helped his team to more than just one playoff series win. And scored enough to look like Brett Hull compared to Abdelkader.

None of that actually helps a team win. You do know that, right? You don't get some sort of superpower when it says MI on your birth certificate and you put on a Wings jersey.

Your point was illogical, irrelevant to the conversation and blind to fact. But thank you for explaining how cap salary and actual salary are different. I totally didn't know that.

I figure Roy's gone as coach by the end of this year, got to think Duchene would welcome a trade out of there.

Burrows to call the league tomorrow regarding the Tootoo thing.
Not a discipline call, just a chat.

You'd think the league would have just asked the score keepers and be done with it.

I expect the result of the call to be:

"We apologize to Mr Burrows for any damage to his good name. We are implementing a 10 game suspension to Tootoo for leaving the bench to start an altercation, and suggest that he takes the hono(u)rable Mr Burrow's advice of [checks transcript] 'get off your momma's tit and stop being a bitch'. We hereby award the Canucks a game in the bank."

Ummm. Yeah. Because Burrows is a such a straight-shooter.

People seem to hate on Tootoo but I don't recall him being a complete ass after the whistle.

So far the trade for Palmieri and signing Kalinin out of the KHL have paid off for the Devils. Both appear to be legit top 6 guys. Zajac returning to form and Henrique taking the next step have been huge as well. Larsson/Green as a top pair have done their job, Schneider and Cammalleri doing their usual thing, this Devils team isn't completely terrible.

nothing computes with anything on this incident

the scorekeepers (as per Tootoo) rolled their eyes at what Burrows said ... yet Zajac was in the box laughing uncontrollably and didnt hear a thing as per Tom Gulliti :noidea:

John Shannon said it was an in person hearing ... Jim Benning was on Ottawa radio and said it was a phone in

Botchford said if they were going to suspend him they already would have but instead allowed him to play 2 games after the incident

I say he gets tagged for 5 games so he misses the jersey game in vancouver nov 22 lol

Also helps that Henrique is playing without torn ligaments in his wrist...
