The Hurricanes have been in Carolina since Karmanos moved the Hartford Whalers to Raleigh in 1997. After reaching the final in 2002 and ultimately falling to the Detroit Red Wings, the franchise captured its first Stanley Cup in 2006.

After finishing 29th in attendance last season with an average of 12,594 fans a night, there was optimism in Raleigh when the team drew a record crowd of 18,949 at PNC Arena for the season opener with the Detroit Red Wings on October 10. Only three weeks later, the team drew just 9,081 for an encounter with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bettman says Hurricanes in no danger of relocation

its cute how people pretend that theres pro hockey in carolina :bolt:

Justin Alligator, 28 years old with one 30 point season under his belt,
signs a 7 year extension ($4 mill avg)

last few years of that may not be pretty.
first few may also be just meh as well.

It's like Holland was out of the office and Jimmy Devellano inked the contract with Anklebiter:

If you remove Abdelkader's games vs. the Leafs this season from the equation, he has 1 goal and 3 points in 13 games.

It's pretty scary that Kessel-less Tyler Bozak (6 pts in 11 games) can be compared favourably production-wise to a 28 year old (29 by season's end) that has played all season on a line with Zetterberg and YOUNG CROSBY. It's even scarier that a GM would give that guy 7 years lol.

I figured you'd chime in on this.

While I'm not a big fan of 7 years - I'd have gone 5 - I am glad that Holland locked Abdelkader up as a Wing for life. Abdelkader plays a very similar game to Dustin Brown and Ryan Callahan - they are on-ice leaders who play well and hard in all situations in all three zones, hit, block shots, fight when necessary, grind in front of the net and corners and has some scoring capability to go along with it. It's not all about scoring points with guys like Abdelkader, it's about team worth. And really, Abdelkader's deal is right on par with Brown and Callahan in length, but at a lesser cost than both. I ain't mad.

Was watching NHL live, and every time that Doug MacLean chimes in on the Blue Jackets I want to get all stabby.

Today's tidbit was that Saad, Johansen, Dubinsky, Clarkson and Bobrovsky are all grossly overpaid.

Well, he's right on one of them.

Abdelkader put up 44 pts last season, a career year and 16 pts more than his previous high total (not to mention the only time he's gone over 30 pts in a season).

Brown and Callahan have both put up multiple 50 pt seasons.

Abdelkader is a bit part player compared to what those two were in their primes and you don't give bit part players 7 year contracts. Hell, it's kinda poetic that you compared him to Dustin Brown because his deal is probably a contender for worst in the league.

But, it seems Detroit fans are happy with this so I'll just smile and nod and in 2018 when Abdelkader is putting up 15 points a year and Detroit has to trade YOUNG CROSBY due to cap issues I promise not to say "I told you so".

When it comes to Johansen I'd say he's obviously nuts, but the others? There's a case for and against all of them.

True. I don't like Dubinsky's salary and never really did, but he's tortorella's golden boy so whatever. I think he's a 5m/year guy at most. Saad is probably a bit lower than what he'd have gotten on the open market. Bob has struggled, but he has no defense in front of him. When all things come together, I am not sure I can name 4 goalies I'd rather have.

MacLean's big comment was "for what they are producing". Well, yeah. Team is in 30th by a long way. EVERYONE is overpaid for what they are producing (including the coach AND GM). But he's making it seem like if he was in charge he wouldn't be paying those stiffs what they're being paid and that's Columbus' whole problem.

Yeah, if he was GM, he wouldn't have paid those guys. He'd just replace them in the draft with Gilbert Brule and Nikita Filatov.

If he was in charge the team would be in Quebec City.

I figured you'd respond with something like this. I say that it's not just about points with Abdelkader and you go right back using points history as your only factor for contract validations. Duncan Keith has scored 29% less points than Erik Karlsson the past four years, so Keith should make 29% less money than Karlsson, right?

Abdelkader is a bit part player? He's on the first scoring line, power play, penalty kill, only second to Zetterberg among forwards in TOI,... Okay, so then what exactly is your definition of a bit part player?

By the way, Abdelkader's yearly cap hit before this contract was $2.25M for a difference of a +$2M raise. When Larkin's contract is up, Datsyuk and Franzen will be retired. There will be plenty of cap space to fill Larkin's pockets.

Because you don't give 7 year contracts to players who don't produce offence??? If you're getting that much time on the PP and on the first line, you should be scoring at the very least 50 points a year. Abdelkader is turning 29 and his career average pts/82 is 27.6 pts and he's on pace for less than 40 this season.

The things you use to defend him - "leader", "plays hard", "hits", "blocks shots", "fights", "grinds", "kills penalties"...you telling me they couldn't have found that elsewhere not only for shorter term but for cheaper than $4.25m?

And for the record, Duncan Keith makes $5 million/yr, which is 24% less than the $6.5 mil avg on Karlsson's deal. But as usual, your comparisons are totally relevant and on point :thumb:

It's really the term rather the dollar figure that I think most people have an issue with - Put it this way, if you were to sign JA to a 4 year deal worth 5.25 million per season (obviously a little high, but three years shorter), I think it's a lot more palatable to the masses (and a heck of a lot easier to move if things don't work out).

It's extremely palatable to me. I hope they follow suit with Helm, Miller and Anderson :D

I'm also hearing that there's a full NTC for the first four years of this contract (limited after four years). Wowza, JA has a good agent.

It's also front-loaded real money-wise, I guess to make him somewhat desirable to budget teams trying to reach the floor after those 4 years.
