Couturier recorded a career-high 15 goals and added 22 assists for 37 points in 82 games for the Flyers last season.

That's a lot of coin for a guy who hasn't delivered the numbers yet in his career. Paying for potential is what I see here. Seems a bit excessive when a bridge contract would, IMO, have been wiser.

I shudder to think what Moneyhands will be looking for when his ELC contract is up.

True, but Couturier has shown a lot in terms of his two-way play to justify it. They're definitely banking on the points coming through, though.

When Sven signed his ELC with the Flames, he earned $925,000 per season.

Some of that seems related to usage though. Lowest percentage of O zone starts on the team, and against the toughest opposition.

And he'll get more of an offensive opportunity now that Dave Hakstol has arrived

greed on all counts but the top end guys of his draft have all shown significant progression offensively.

Nonetheless Couts is the safest bet to remain a useful NHL player out there, so this contract at worst will be a slight overpayment.

He's lagging, but it's not by a hell of a lot. Most of the guys taken ahead of him are in the .50 - .58 points per game range while he's at .41. If can put up 45-50 points this season that would justify his deal.

The salaries these guys are getting now are awful. This is another 1. Someone with Couturier's skill set and numbers should not be making over 4 million a year.

Why not? You don't think key players who earn the owners millions playing for a team that is so popular that it is going to be broadcast nationally more than any other team in the league save the reigning champs this season are entitled to $2 mil after tax?

I think we need to get used to the fact that "average to good" players in this league are gong to be making 4 to 5 million dollars per season. Don't be shocked if Brandon Sutter gets at least 4.5 million per season on a 4-5 year contract with the Canucks especially when he is a pending UFA and will get at least that on the open market next year.
