I think we need to get used to the fact that "average to good" players in this league are gong to be making 4 to 5 million dollars per season. Don't be shocked if Brandon Sutter gets at least 4.5 million per season on a 4-5 year contract with the Canucks especially when he is a pending UFA and will get at least that on the open market next year.

i think i heard the average salary for players who scored 20 goals last season was 4.1 shmill ... so ... :noidea:

The cap has gone up in the past decade. I don't understand where the money for salaries was supposed to be spent - all of it given to the superstars?

There are bad contracts. Of course there are. But instead of having the same conversation every time a 2nd or 3rd line centre gets $4-5 mil maybe it's just time for people to realize that's the norm lol

Jonathan Bernier is asking for $5.1 mil in arb lmao. Leafs offering $2.89 mil.

Bernier was outside of the top 30 in save percentage last season. The guy ahead of him was Michal Neuvirth. He just signed to backup Steve Mason for $1.5 mil/yr.

The thing you need to avoid are bad players on bad contracts. I present Luca Sbisa as 'Exhibit A'

The problem is that it's a self-perpetuating issue. Salaries are up so various prices (tickets, souvenirs, food, etc.) go up in turn, which increases HRR, which increases the salary cap, which increases salaries. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Followed by another NHL lockout when the current CBA expires :(

The salaries these guys are getting now are awful. This is another 1. Someone with Couturier's skill set and numbers should not be making over 4 million a year.

His skill set is very good. His offensive numbers don't match it largely for reasons that aren't his fault. He plays with shitty linemates, plays against the opposition's best lines and starts most of his shifts in his own zone (worst zone starts on the Flyers and bottom 10% in the entire league). It's really tough to score like that.

Stepan hasn't potted more than 20 in a season dating back to 2010, and the Rags just signed on for $6.5aav

That's a little deceiving, he was well over that pace in the shortened season.

He was actually well over the pace, last year, too. Just got injured. IAC, I'm not impressed with Stepan. He received a contract that pays him just a smidgen below a top line center, yet he's really a two, at best. I think he's more comparable to a 3.

My favourite detail/rebuttal didn't make it in there. Simmons was going on about how Bolland must be good simply because he was on the ice in the last minute of a Stanley Cup game (the "you think you're smarter than Quenneville?" crap), but when you look at the ice time numbers for that game he was right down near the bottom, as I recall he was largely on the ice because Toews and Handzus had both just finished a long, tough (and productive of course) shift with the goalie pulled.

He was a top 10 centre last season in 5 on 5 points per 60 min, and the data doesn't show his linemates carrying him at all. He's not Sidney Crosby, but he's probably closer to being him than he is to being a 3rd liner.

Actually, which 3rd line centres do you think are better than him?

There aren't many. If I had to make a comparison to a 3rd line center that Stepan reminds me of, but is now on the back nine of his career, I think I'd go with Brooks Laich. If you look at Laich's career arc in just scoring, they are actually very comparable. Laich's AAV is $4.5. That is almost exactly what I think a guy like Stepan is worth. Derek lucked out. He was in the right place at the right time. Good for him. Doesn't mean I can't say the guy is being overpaid, though.

As dumb as it may be to do, I've basically thrown that entire season out the window. Too much weird shit on stat lines and in the standings. The Hawks, in my mind, were awarded the Cup via lottery and the season never happened.

Derek Stepan might be a very good #2, but there's no shot he's a 3. You're really reaching now.
